I have written this way back 2013: being a pacer is not an easy task. You have to be out there, enduring the pain while cheering for them. You cannot have an excuse because they need you at this very moment.
This year, I volunteered to be a 10k pacer for 60 minutes in the 2015 Run United Series organized by Unilab Active Health. The first time I actually got my sub-1 was back in 2010 and it was the best feeling ever! I was just starting my love for the sport and after quite a number of 3k’s and 5k’s, my first 10k was a sub-1!
Seriously, doing a sub-1 in 10k is a big deal. 10k is in between the short distances and the half marathon, it marries endurance and speed. You have to maintain a 5:55 minutes per kilometer to 6 pace and it can be hard if you’re not used to it. Some signs that will show are drying up in the throat (so better be well hydrated), soreness in the calves and the quads (so have a good compression or a recovery drink after every workout) and feeling lightheaded (you need an equal amount of good carbs and sugar).
But you will be rewarded in the end. a 5:45-5:55 pace could give you enough walking time at the last 2-3 kilometers but you have to monitor your heartbeat and even your breathing as you might be reaching your VO2 max or the maximum heartrate that a sudden stop can mean blacking out. So try to do a slower pace to 5:57-6:00 before eventually doing the brisk walking.
As most of the participants were doing half and full marathon in RUPM, only a handful were trailing behind our pack and eventually I can only count up to 5 who maintained the 6 minutes per kilometer pace. I have to be honest: I lost 2 minutes from the target time in the last leg of this series. YOU REALLY NEED TO BE CONSISTENT WITH YOUR TRAINING.
Overall, it was a great feeling seeing other pacers cheering all the runners regardless of the distance or the effort. We were all smiling as we push the runners to their limits before crossing the finish line and the Run United Philippine Marathon 2015 was a success with a new route that resembles the marathon in Singapore!
We had a hearty breakfast afterwards and rewarded with a cold Enervon HP just a great recovery drink after that intense race. Thank you to Unilab Active Health and RunRio for this opportunity!
