Vanilla Coffee Body Scrub
Hello beauties! Today I will be sharing with you a recipe that I found ages ago and unfortunately lost the source for, as I just saved it as a note in my phone. I pair this with an exfoliating washcloth and emerge from the shower with buttery soft skin like the exfoliated goddess that I am! I haven’t included links for purchase of any of the mentioned ingredients because they are all able to be found easily at your local grocery store. Hope you enjoy this, its super easy and fun to make and would make a sweet home made gift!
- 1 Cup Coffee Grounds (can use grounds already used for brewing, but i recommend letting them dry out a bit first)
- 2/3 Cup Brown Sugar
- 1/2 Cup Honey
- 2 Tablespoons Vanilla Extract
- 1 Cup (Unmelted) Coconut Oil
Mix together and store in an airtight jar!
I’m not sure exactly how long this can be stored for, so just keep an eye on it and toss the second you notice any funky odor or change in appearance.
**WARNING: This awesome DIY product will beautifully exfoliate your skin, but it will also beautifully STAIN YOUR BATHTUB. I typically only use 1-2 times a week to avoid scrubbing at the tub walls for hours on end**

What Is an Exfoliating Scrub and Why Should You Use It?
An exfoliating scrub is a skincare product designed to remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin, revealing a fresher, smoother, and more radiant complexion. Unlike basic cleansers, exfoliating scrubs contain physical or chemical agents that help accelerate cell turnover, improve skin texture, and support the effectiveness of other skincare products.
How Exfoliating Scrubs Work
Exfoliating scrubs work in two main ways:
Physical Exfoliation: Small granules, beads, or natural particles gently buff away dead skin cells. This type provides immediate smoothness but should be used carefully to avoid irritation.
Chemical Exfoliation: Ingredients such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), or enzymes dissolve dead skin cells without manual scrubbing. This method is ideal for sensitive skin or those prone to acne.
By removing the layer of dead skin, exfoliating scrubs improve the skin’s ability to absorb serums, moisturisers, and other active ingredients, enhancing overall skincare results.
Benefits of Using an Exfoliating Scrub
Smooths Skin Texture: Reduces rough patches, leaving the skin soft and even.
Brightens Complexion: Clears dullness and reveals a healthy glow.
Unclogs Pores: Prevents breakouts and blackheads by removing trapped debris.
Supports Skin Renewal: Promotes cell turnover, improving elasticity and overall skin health.
Enhances Product Absorption: Makes moisturisers and serums more effective by removing the barrier of dead skin.
Types of Exfoliating Scrubs
Facial Scrubs: Gentle formulas designed for delicate facial skin. Ingredients like jojoba beads or fine sugar particles reduce irritation while effectively exfoliating.
Body Scrubs: Stronger formulations designed for thicker skin on the body, often containing salt, sugar, or coffee grounds for deeper exfoliation.
Enzyme Scrubs: Use natural fruit enzymes like papaya or pineapple to gently dissolve dead skin cells, suitable for sensitive skin.
How to Use an Exfoliating Scrub
Cleanse First: Start with a clean face or body to remove surface dirt and oil.
Apply Gently: Massage the scrub using circular motions, avoiding aggressive rubbing.
Focus on Problem Areas: Concentrate on rough or dry patches, avoiding delicate areas like under the eyes.
Rinse Thoroughly: Use lukewarm water to remove all particles and residue.
Moisturise: Follow with a nourishing moisturiser to hydrate and soothe the freshly exfoliated skin.
Tips for Safe Exfoliation
Frequency: Use facial scrubs 1–2 times per week; body scrubs can be used 2–3 times per week.
Avoid Over-Exfoliating: Excessive scrubbing can damage the skin barrier, causing redness, irritation, or sensitivity.
Choose the Right Product: Select a scrub suitable for your skin type and concern, whether sensitive, dry, oily, or acne-prone.
Sun Protection: Exfoliated skin is more sensitive to sunlight; always apply sunscreen during the day.
Who Can Benefit from Exfoliating Scrubs
Individuals with dull, uneven skin tone.
People prone to clogged pores, blackheads, or acne.
Those seeking improved absorption of moisturisers and serums.
Anyone looking to enhance overall skin texture and radiance.
Final Thoughts
An exfoliating scrub is an essential addition to a balanced skincare routine, helping remove dead skin cells, brighten complexion, and promote smooth, healthy skin. By selecting the right type of scrub for your skin and using it correctly, you can achieve a radiant, refreshed, and youthful appearance.
Incorporating exfoliation alongside cleansing, serums, and moisturisers ensures your skin remains smooth, hydrated, and better prepared to receive the full benefits of your skincare products. Consistent, gentle use of an exfoliating scrub is key to long-term skin health and visible glow.
How to Choose the Right Exfoliating Scrub for Your Skin?
Exfoliation is a crucial step in maintaining smooth and healthy skin. Using an exfoliating scrub helps remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and promote a radiant complexion. However, selecting the right scrub can be challenging, as different formulas suit different skin types. Here’s a complete guide to help you choose the best exfoliating scrub for your routine.
Identify Your Skin Type
Before picking a scrub, understand your skin type to prevent irritation or damage:
Oily skin: Can benefit from scrubs with gentle microbeads or chemical exfoliants like salicylic acid to control excess oil.
Dry skin: Opt for mild, creamy scrubs that provide hydration while removing dead skin.
Sensitive skin: Look for ultra-gentle scrubs with soothing ingredients, avoiding harsh granules.
Combination skin: Use scrubs suited for different zones, e.g., oil-absorbing ingredients for the T-zone and moisturizing ones for dry areas.
Matching the scrub to your skin type ensures effective exfoliation without causing redness or irritation.
Choose the Right Ingredients
Ingredients determine the effectiveness and gentleness of your exfoliating scrub. Consider the following:
Physical exfoliants: Fine granules like jojoba beads or rice powder gently remove dead skin cells. Avoid overly rough scrubs that can damage skin.
Chemical exfoliants: AHAs (glycolic or lactic acid) and BHAs (salicylic acid) dissolve dead skin cells and are ideal for acne-prone or aging skin.
Soothing additions: Aloe vera, chamomile, or green tea extracts calm the skin while exfoliating.
Reading ingredient labels helps you avoid products that may cause irritation.
Frequency Matters
Over-exfoliating can harm the skin’s natural barrier, leading to sensitivity, dryness, or breakouts. Most skin types benefit from exfoliating 1–3 times per week. Sensitive skin should exfoliate less frequently, while oily or combination skin may tolerate more frequent use. Always follow product guidelines.
Patch Test New Products
Even gentle scrubs can cause reactions. Conduct a patch test by applying a small amount to your inner arm or behind the ear. Wait 24–48 hours for any signs of irritation. If your skin tolerates it, the scrub is safe to use on your face.
Application Tips
Wet your skin before applying the scrub.
Use gentle circular motions; avoid harsh scrubbing.
Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
Follow with a moisturizer to lock in hydration and protect the skin barrier.
Proper application enhances the benefits of your exfoliating scrub while minimizing potential damage.
Avoid Common Mistakes
Do not exfoliate daily unless using a very mild scrub.
Avoid scrubs with large, jagged particles that can tear skin.
Do not skip moisturizing afterward; exfoliation can temporarily dry the skin.
Seek Expert Advice
If you’re unsure about which scrub to use, consult a dermatologist or skincare professional. They can recommend products that suit your skin type and address specific concerns like acne, dullness, or fine lines.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the right exfoliating scrub is essential for smooth, glowing skin. Consider your skin type, preferred ingredients, exfoliation frequency, and proper application techniques. By following these guidelines, you can safely integrate exfoliation into your skincare routine and enjoy healthier, more radiant skin. The exfoliating scrub you select should complement your skincare goals and enhance your natural glow without causing irritation.
