The Different Parts of an Exhaust System and What They Do

Headers

The first component to focus on is the header, it is the front most part of the exhaust system and is connected to the cylinder head. The headers main job is to scavenge used up exhaust gases from the combustion chamber of the engine.

When you purchase an after-market header, make sure it's mandrel-bent to insure better exhaust flow. This will reduce the back pressure robbing power from your vehicle, as well as, help clean the combustion chamber.

There are two main types of headers; full-length (regular) and shorty. These two types come in multiple forms, such as Tri-Y and 4-into-1.

Downpipe

The main purpose of downpipes is to link the header to the muffler. They stretch down the entirety of the lower underpart of the car, but can sometimes be interrupted by the catalytic converter, depending on the type of exhaust system you choose.

Catalytic Converter

This is also referred to as a 'cat back system', the catalytic converter does not lessen exhaust noise, but rather reduces the amount of harmful emissions that the vehicle releases.

This is a mandatory must have for any and all cars, by law. There is an approved amount of car emissions that can be released from your car when travelling on public roads, and to travel them, you need an 'exhaust air freshener'.

Muffler

The muffler is the back most component of the exhaust system and its job it to (as the name suggest) muffle the sound the car produces. But even though its job sounds simple, there are different ways a muffler can achieve this, and depending on the technique used, it can be sometimes quite complex.

Some of the ways a muffler can dampen the sound is with a combination of baffles, tubes, chambers and sound deadening materials. A good muffler will perforce its job without stealing too much power with back-pressure. Manufacturers can configure the muffler to achieve different types of sounds.

Tailpipe

The tailpipe is usually the last component of the exhaust system. It is connected to the muffler and protrudes ether from the back or side of the car's body. Most manufacturers finish off their tailpipes with chrome tips or polished tips, but you can still buy these tips separately with your own choice of finish.
