This giant piece of art took forever to make. It will serve as the backdrop to my webcomic, if slightly dimmed for accessibility. (We've also implemented an option to replace it with just a starry background.)
I tried to replicate the feeling of looking at an infinite, complex fractal, something like the Mandelbrot Set, without drawing an actual fractal. Although I did incorporate some known linear fractals in this, like the dragon curve.
This is Death! In preparation for Artfight, I've finally given them a design overhaul. Hopefully I will update this artwork with a full turnaround and close-up details before July.
The design process for this character shown below:
I started off with taking their initial design and simplifying it down to four arms, plus some added detail to their "hair" to hopefully make it read more as being flowers instead.
Next, I tackled their clothes. For the first design I didn't reference any specific garment, but for this rework I decided to give them a tailcoat! This way I knew exactly what to reference, and the tails also helped improve the shape of their silhouette.
As the last step I tested a bunch of different color palettes, comparing them against Life, who Death usually carries around, to make sure they don't clash. There was one pass I did where Death had a white shirt, but it looked horrible with Life in front of it, so I quickly moved past that. For the final palette I wanted to make sure that there was enough contrast between their clothes and body so that their arms wouldn't blend in if they hold them in front of their torso.
After all that, I had my final design! It's hard for me to get into the zone for character design, and I had wanted to work on Death for years. I'm happy I finally got around to it, it turned out really nice.
Characters from left to right are Life, Death, and Intern (but that's more or less obvious). Life is the CEO of Existence Inc. and the intern actually got a paid internship, because Death insisted that he should earn something.
I'm planning to do a webcomic with some friends and am currently working on character design and figuring out the artstyle of the comic.
I was testing different ways to do lineart in the drawing above, but I still can't decide on one. If anyone is seeing this, it would be nice to get some feedback.
I'm currently siding towards G Pen 50/20, G Pen 25, or Pen 50.
