EXOPOLIS: cities where nothing is real
I was reading Edward Soja's “Inside expolis: Scenes from Orange County," which describes the new type of urban landscape, that of an exopolis. This exopolis is characterized by
1. a society increasingly regulated by absorbing simulacra: exact copies of originals that no longer exist, or perhaps never existed in the first place
2. cities that are doubles of themselves, cities that only exist as nostalgic references to the idea of city and to the ideas of communication and social intercourse…they are no longer centers; they only serve to similar the phenomenon of the center
3. everything is possible and nothing is real.
4. image and reality became spectacularly confused inside exopolis, the truth not only disappears but becomes totally and preternaturally irrelevant
I was thinking architecturally, if i wanted to create a structure in a specific geogrpahical location, i would automatically think of the local architectural style of that place. I wonder if that kind of thinking is similar to the exopolis idea of a simulucra. As in my first instinct is to recreate that architectural style. and of course that wont be the finished product, but now it makes me wonder what the process would be to actually create a building that is well situated in a specific location. And to create something that is uniquely your own and not just a copy, but still based from that location.
the idea of exopolis is interesting as well. the article is saying that our major cities have become exopolis, a place full of simulation and where nothing is real. The article did not give much solutions to pull apart from this kind of city, and i cant come up with anything either. any thoughts on this?
