Incheon, Summer 2020
‘please look a little more excited’ Rian, her agent, whispered as their team reached the departures area. Sure enough, as soon as the sliding doors opened, a barrage of flashes and shouts welcomed the group.
Lee Haneul sighs, doing her best to smile and ignore the questions being thrown. Her return to Korea after four years of being absent already proved to be a sigh worthy event. Rian place’s a hand to her back, reminding her to stand straight, countless hours in front of her laptop had probably made Haneul slouch or maybe Rian was just too strict with her professionalism.
‘you have to always look your best’
Rian emphasized always as AL (chin raised) ways (chin down), when they first met in a coffee shop in Vancouver. She wore a pastel pink knee length dress shirt that day, 29-year-old, chocolate haired Rian who in many ways, saved Haneul. She wondered if she hired Rian because of how she emphasized the word always or because she’s good at what she does. She doesn’t remember.
All too familiar highways and buildings welcomed Haneul as they make their way to Seoul, South Korea’s capital. Rian’s conversation with Kirby, her make up artist, became muted as they navigated through the 5:00 pm traffic. Haneul never thought she’d ever come back to Seoul, as a writer, nevertheless.
She didn’t think her poetry collection would come this far, she only wanted a release from the heartbreak – she wanted to get away from the pain and yet it brought her back to where it began.
Focusing her attention to Rian who’s re-applying her wine-coloured lip tint, Haneul sighed for what she felt like was the 100th one since leaving Vancouver. Her agent just raised her eyebrows and shook her head before flicking Haneul’s forehead knowing all too well what she was thinking.
