Why Minimalism?
I’ve been asked why I pursue to love a minimalist lifestyle, especially in a society of constant consumerism. My answer is freedom and happiness.
The freedom I’ve felt through this journey is unreal. Not felt pressured to buy the latest and greatest all the time help me feel free. I’ve also realized that because I don’t just blow money on things I don’t really need or even want I have extra money so that when I do want something or need something I can buy a more quality item. I’ve also felt more freedom because I just don’t have as much clutter. Clutter causes stress and without it I feel much better.
Living with less makes me happy because I have more time for why matters. I have more time and energy to enjoy experiences with family, friends, and my girlfriend. It makes me happy because I’ve been able to give more to people who need and help then out. But what I think has been the best is through this journey I have been able to forget about the constant feeling of wanting new things an can now focus on what really matters to me.
What is minimalism?
When I was introduced to minimalism I had a lot of questions. The biggest question though was "what is minimalism". Is it living with 100 items and that's it? Is it only having enough items to fit in a bag? I had to figure out what minimalism was exactly. The good news is that minimalism is really whatever I want it to be. If that is living with only 100 items that's okay. If it's 500 that's okay too. But to me minimalism is this: living with less, experiencing more. This means I don't go out and buy a bunch of new stuff when I have perfectly good stuff. It also means I believe in replacing. For example instead of having 50 pairs of jeans I have 4 and when one gets too worn out to wear I replace it. I use replacing with almost everything. It means the money used to spend on unneeded things I can now spend on others or on experiences. Minimalism doesn't mean getting rid of everything you own. It means being more conscience of what you own and what you consume. Minimalism is: Living with less, experiencing more.
