List of experiments whose names aren't tied to their functions/abilities
Gigi (007) - Named by Mertle, who adopted her believing she was a dog. Lilo originally wanted to name her "Yapper".
Topper (025) - He ended up using his ability to become a Christmas tree topper instead of carrying out his primary function.
Shoe (113) - Lilo said he needed shoes.
Link (251) - Short for "Lincolnstein", a fictional zombie president.
Mary (455)
Yin (501) - Was named this after it was discovered she could work well with Yang.
Yang (502) - Was named this after it was discovered he could work well with Yin.
Derrick (566)
Yaarp (613) - Debatable. I've heard that "yaarp" is a word for a loud noise in Pleakley's language, but this wasn't directly stated or implied in Yaarp's episode and I haven't been able to find anything that confirms it.
Chopsuey (621) - Debatable. The 621 we know from the PS2 game wasn't officially given a real name, and it's not known what kind of 621 would have been in the series if they showed one, nor whether they would have taken elements from the game's canon.
Angel (624) - She's meant to sing like an angel and Stitch sees her as one, but the specific reason behind her name wasn't made clear.
Reuben (625) - Named for the sandwiches he makes, which he wasn't programmed for.
Stitch (626) - Named by Lilo, who adopted him believing he was a dog. The big theory goes that she wanted someone to "stitch" her family back together.
Leroy (629) - Named by Hamsterviel, who deemed the name genius.
I think it's cool that there can be lots of different origins for experiment names! Some of these still relate to their abilities by coincidence!
