“A Wind Blows from the South” moves through the ambient sounds in and around the 184 year old St. John’s Episcopal Church back to the church’s days hiding people escaping American slavery in it’s bell tower reverbating with vocal incantations. Code chants warn of slave catchers, clandestine whispers of departing ships for Canada and cryptograms form the chorus and percussion of this piece. I set out to create an auditory encounter with one of the nation’s few authenticated Underground Railroad stations. 4/4
