Hello to any strong shippers, supergirl fans, and overall to friends. I’m here to defend Maggie’s character and even defend Floriana for some hatred I’ve seen thrown at the character and the actress. Things stated about both the character and the actress have gone too far. I understand preferences but starting whole hashtags to take down and harm an actress for playing her character to her best abilities, is past a point. I am planning to address the biggest issues and hatred I’ve seen regarding the character and the actress. I do hope you’ll take some time to read this and even reply with any questions or anything else you’d like to see me address. Before I fully begin, this will contain mentions of, abuse, alcoholic and or substance abuse, emotional abuse, abandonment, and things alike. Please be aware of those when reading. Thank you. Now to fully address this.
To begin with, I'd like to address the hatred towards Maggie and statements regarding her abusing Alex Danvers. Let me begin with the beginning. Maggie was made to be a character with a hard past. She was not supposed to be a joyful, sunshine and rainbow character. She had a hard life and was there to represent hardships. She was kicked out of her home by her parents, at age 14. For who she loved. That is not an easy thing to live with, no matter who you are. She even described her father as “The best father” in episode 3, season 3. The scene Alex is asking Maggie for more details about her abandonment. She says “Before that day, he was the best father. I know he sounds like a monster, but you don't know where he came from.” In this, you can already hear pain in her voice. Because she held hope for her father, as she states later in that episode. But the point of that is to state, Maggie had a close relationship with her father. She was betrayed by someone she loved and she was close to. She is not going to be all cheery and happy with a story like that. And one thing I believe happened is, her story was very censored for the fact the show could have gotten hate for controversial topics. I believe if her past with her dad was better portrayed she would have come off less harsh. Because then she would have been better understood. I understand Maggie did project a lot of her hardships and sadness onto Alex. But I believe she more confided in Alex than she did emotionally abuse Alex. Because again, Alex was the one that asked for more details, portraying the fact that Maggie didn’t seem to talk about herself, as stated in earlier episodes. Maggie did have a lot of problems, I will not say she’s a perfect character on her own. She is a character that in a case she was real, she would need therapy, and maybe even medicine to treat her. Maggie was a harsh character who meant the best. You could see how much she was there for Alex after the situation with Alex’s dad. She held Alex through her crying, and even reassured Alex that she could be told anything. She was there for Alex. They were there for eachother. But they had their issues. Maggie had a hard time with lying, yes. That is true. But she lied because she was scared of revisiting the past. Can you blame her for not wanting to address the past of her being abandoned on the side of the road? Really, a lot of her character was misunderstood. Last thing to address regarding Maggie is the drinking issues. A lot of people claim she did drugs or she was drunk and abusive. Well, to my close observations. Maggie didn’t do drugs, because well she was also a detective in the scientific department. But regarding the drinking, both Alex and Maggie drank. A lot. If you hate Maggie for her drinking issues, then you should hate Alex for the same thing. Everytime you see Alex sad, you see a drink in her hands. Both of them needed therapy, or even couple therapy. They were two broken people who had a very strong love for the other, but both had their own issues. Having issues does not make Maggie an abusive character. She was broken, but never abusive.
Now to address the hatred towards Floriana. I understand, you may dislike Maggie, or may believe things such as she is toxic or abusive. But Floriana is not her character, she is not Maggie Sawyer, she is not Darcy Cooper, ect. She is her own person doing her best. She is not a character. Therefore she does not deserve to receive hatred you have for her character. I understand disliking a character, but some people have gotten to a point of body shaming Flo just because they dislike Maggie. It is past a point to have such disrespect for someone for simply doing what they were hired for. You don’t know Floriana personally so none of us have the right to say whether she’s evil or whatever. I’m simply stating, please have basic respect for people. Actors and actresses are not their characters. Please have basic respect for them portraying the character to their best abilities.
