Pathological Beauchene "Exploded" Opossum Skull
idk if I’ve ever posted the beauchêne rabbit skull I made last here here? The base was a rich brown but I’m painting it black to match my decor a little better
Cranium with the bones of the calvarium and face and mounted separately by Bauchene's method. This method of disarticulating, or “exploding,” the cranial bones was developed by French anatomist and surgeon, Edmé François Chauvot de Beauchêne (c.1780-1830). The method bearing Beauchêne’s name was developed as a means of studying and displaying the architecture of the human head.
Have you ever seen an EXPLODED DINOSAUR SKULL?!? Congrats to the incredible team at the Royal Tyrrell Museum for completing this truly unique mount! ***Repost @royaltyrrell Daspletosaurus torosus is now on display! This display was one of our most difficult and technical projects yet, using new technologies and artistic techniques to create the cast and mount. As far as we know, it is the only exploded dinosaur skull in the world. #FossilFriday**"
An “exploded” skull is a skull that has been carefully divided [often with a laser] and mounted on a stand for study and display. Cutting the skull in this way allows the viewer a multi-dimensional look at the inner workings of the specimen. This exploded skull is of a domestic pig [Sus scrofa domesticus]. This is a REAL 1960s "exploded" human skull! Crafted by the famous Clay Adams medical supply company in New York, it even features exposed sinuses and dentition! This process is often called "exploding" a skull, but is more formally known as a "Beauchene skull" after 18th century french anatomist Claude Beauchene who was renowned for creations such as these, used for medical reference. This is a truly unique specimen. We are asking $4450CAD (~3370USD) and we can ship this beautiful mount worldwide! Buy it now on www.SkullStore.ca or in-store at 1193 Weston rd, Toronto. For additional information or payment plans email [email protected].
07/20/2021 - Exploded skull study
A while back, SkullStore.ca had a really cool didactic skull available for sale, and it made me want to draw it. The piece was showcasing layers of the skull, their thickness, and they were held in place with transparent acrylic rods.
I went ahead with RetroSupply Co's blotty inker, which you can grab from a number of their sets: the liner brush pack, the mid-century brush pack, or the mid-century brush bundle.
The piece took me a long time, due to personal events. Finishing it was pretty cathartic.
