joel’s arc in life series is sooooo good like. he let himself rely on others in wild life and it led him to the peak of success!!! obviously he worked hard himself but it was never enough in past seasons. so this one, he made the conscious decision to trust someone fully. the rest of his “allies” followed similar patterns to previous seasons, but this time he let himself trust someone to fully be his teammate.

you could argue he did this with etho in double life, but etho wasn’t loyal and wasn’t exactly enthused about being his soulmate, which understandably made their relationship a bit more rocky, at least at first. and then etho consistently went to go with bdubs for things, leaving joel alone. it’s not a value judgement on anyone, just an assessment of the situation.

with gem, he shared everything, he never questioned her loyalty, he never even considered betraying her trust. he put his effort into helping not himself as an individual but his team as a unit. it was never about joel it was about the family. he tells gem everything, is vulnerable with her in a way that lets them both rely on each other. the last session he comes up to her first thing and confesses how scared he is and gem sympathizes by expressing her own worries and then reassures him by saying it’s them against the world. she implicitly says she will always be beside him.

and gem’s role in joel’s win/arc cannot be overstated. she is the one that speaks joel’s tiny hope of winning into reality. he doesn’t bring it up until she says, enthusiastically, that he could win this. they make plans for if it comes down to them. they want it to be them. gem getting taken out by the vex was a variable they couldn’t have predicted (hence the name wild life), and though they had been able to avoid deaths from wild cards until now, it was only a matter of time, really it was just unfortunate. they both did amazingly well, and gem’s loss was clearly felt after. he technically had grian, but it was really just barely an alliance. gem was his ride or die, so when she died, he knew he had to win.

ok going to bed soon but literally just . thinking about the professional breakup . and maxim telling VR LA that he could no longer avail of his friendship *or more* (🤨🏳️‍🌈⁉️) and then immediately telling VR-LA that he didn't *want* to cut that off but he thought it was necessary to keep himself safe . Austin was so crazy for that . these are all things that he actually said only somewhat paraphrased because I don't have a perfect memory . damn .
