I love wandering around and finding historical gems when we travel and this one looks like it’s out of Harry Potter’s world. Welcome to Fan Tan Alley, Canada’s narrowest street, located in Victoria, BC’s Chinatown. Popular in the 1800s, the gambling game “Fan Tan” was played in six gambling dens upstairs above the alley, thus the name. The ground floor shoppes were once opium dens (opium was legal till 1908), restaurants, shops and a tofu factory. Gambling was illegal then, so trap doors to second floors were in place, plus locked gates at each end of the alley, to help slow down police when they raided the gambling dens. These days the alley is host to local shops and artisans, such as @purelovinchocolate @latana_victoria @saltspringsoap @theumbrellatorium @devilmaywear @kidsistericecream. @tourismvictoriabc #explorevictoriabc #eatplaytravelexplore #victoriabc #downtownvictoria #travel #vancouvergetaways (at Fan Tan Alley)
