It had been a few years since she had been back home. When she had gone to the city to go to college to study art, she thought she would come back often to visit her mother and father back in the valley. But she got caught up with life in the city. It wasn't that she liked it, no, she didn't care for it much. There were too many people and the air wasn't as clear as it was back home. She used her inhaler more there then she ever did before. It was that school took over her life. She often found herself in the library studying for her classes or in her apartment working on a project for class. While she loved learning and creating things, it was often at the expense of her creativity. Her teachers wanted specific things. Guidelines she should follow when painting or drawing. Her imagination meant nothing to them. This wasn't what she wanted. She felt like she was in too deep now. She was twenty. Over half way done with her schooling and her imagination seemed to have died. Grace had no idea what she wanted to do with her life anymore. She felt out of place here. Abigail was already off in medical school studying to become a doctor. Her older sister always knew what she wanted to do. But Grace didn't want to be a doctor. She had loved paining and drawing when she was younger. But she had also loved something else then too.
With her exams over with, she decided she would go back home for the summer. In the past she had put off going back. She knew things were not going well for her family. But when were they ever? She needed to figure out what she wanted to do. She still felt trapped in her schooling. She felt trapped in the city full of people and unclean air. She needed to clear her head. So the girl caught the first ferry of the day back to the island, docking in the town of Mistwood. She debating checking up on her Aunt and Uncle to see how the couple was doing, but she decided against it. She would visit them another day. Instead, she walked the path to Silverleaf. The trees seemed to have grown larger since the last time she had come this way. Maybe it was just her imagination. They were probably the same size they had always been. With each step closer to her hometown, the more nervous she got. Her mother would ask her about school and then quickly change the subject. Grace knew that she was disappointed, though she would never admit it. Her mother had always wanted one of her children to take after her and be an archaeologist. Grace was always too weak to do that and it didn't interest her as much as it did her mother. If anyone, Joel was the one destined to take up that line of work. Grace shifted her bag uncomfortably on her shoulder as she thought of her deceased brother. It was something she didn't like to think about. But she would always remember him. She had loved her little brother. But when she lost him, she had also lost something else that she had never been able to get back.
The town seemed exactly the same. She hadn't expected it to change much in three years. It was always the same, no matter what happened. Her house was at the end of the road. Her pace slowed as if to put off the inevitable. She had no idea what to except when she walked in. She hadn't told them that she was coming, even though they had spoke on the phone a few days earlier. Grace stopped outside the door, and placed her hand on the doorknob. Her heart was beating fast in her chest and she was having trouble breathing. Out of habit, she reached up with her other hand and placed her hand over hear heart to try and calm herself down. She reached into her bag and took a few puffs from her inhaler. She could do this. It was just her parents. With a deep breath, she bagged her inhaler and opened the door.
The clinic was quiet as she entered. The door to the house was open though, which was curious. Growing up it had always been closed. She entered the doorway and gave a quiet knock on the frame before entering. “Grace?” a voice called to her right. Almost at once, her mother was there before her. It was hard to read her expression, but she knew that the woman was excited to see her. Grace gave a smile and moved forward slowly to give her a hug. Tora hugged her daughter quickly before backing up to examine her. “What's wrong? Did something happen?” Yep. That was her mother. Always thinking the worst. “No, nothing's wrong. It's...It's summer break so I thought I would come visit for a bit... I mean if that's okay with you...” Tora shook her head and folded her arms. “Of course it's okay. As long as you don't plan on moving back here. I'd like to enjoy my time and not taking care of you kids,” she huffed, looking angry. But it wasn't for long. She gave her daughter a smirk and then walked away to the stairs. “Shea! Come see who decided to show her face!”
Grace gripped the strap of her bag a little tighter when she heard her father's footsteps. She wondered if he would remember her. Her mother had told her that his memory was getting worse. Not seeing him for a long time didn't help either. He had stopped at the bottom of the stairs and was staring at her. He looked older. They both did. There were noticeable traces of gray in his hair. He was squinting at her, but didn't say anything. “...Daddy?” she said quietly, hoping to trigger his memory. “Gracie?” he replied, a wide smile spreading across his face. Grace let out a sigh of relief, followed by her moving forward to meet her father. He wrapped his arms around her tightly and wouldn't let go, unlike her mother. But Grace didn't care. She felt like a child again, safe in his arms. When he finally let go of her, he studied her, just like her mother had done.
Going home wasn't as bad as she had made it out to be. The first few days she had stayed at home, catching up with her parents. On the third day, her father didn't remember who she was. That was when her mother suggested she go out and wander around town. Maybe visit Longwei and Rosemary for a while. Her mother wasn't suggesting it, but Grace didn't argue. She knew that she was doing it for her benefit. Grace was already upset by it. He thought she was some patient. He wasn't mean. But it hurt her that he had no idea who she was.
So she packed her book bag with a sketchbook and some pencils. She didn't know where she would be going, but she needed to get out. Her feet let her towards the dig site. The tent was still there, but it didn't really inspire her to draw. Something was tugging at her. She wondered if the goddess spring was still there. At the thought, she laughed at herself for being so stupid. Of course it was still there. It was sacred ground, even if she didn't believe in that stuff anymore. It took a while, but she finally came upon a small clearing.
It was quieter than the rest of the forest. Yes. This was it. She was itching to draw this place. Grace settled on the grass, back up against a tree. She took out her book and flipped to a blank page and started drawing. It was so peaceful here. The air was clean and it was so easy to breathe. The girl stopped and took in the place. She closed her eyes and cleared her mind, if only for a moment. A feeling started to creep in. It was small at first, barely noticeable. But it began to grow and she was thinking about her childhood friend. Mr. King. No. It was Atticus, wasn't it? That's what her aunt had told her. Grace opened her eyes quickly, trying to forget about him. She hadn't thought about him in so long. Not since Joel died. He wasn't even real. And yet, she couldn't shake the feeling that he was. The thing with Abigail? Had she just imagined that? Nobody talked about it. So it didn't happen...right? Another nudge. The girl shook her head again to try and stop it. It didn't work.
Grace looked around for a moment. There was nobody there with her. And yet, it felt like there was. This was stupid. “Atticus?” she called. Nothing. Grace frowned. Why even try? She went back to her sketching. A slight breeze filled the clearing, enough to move the paper. She stopped. No. He wasn't real. It was stupid to try. Back to work. This time the wind was a bit stronger. She stopped once more, frowning. Grace looked around the clearing and saw nobody. “...Mr. King?” she said quietly, in case some was there. Nothing. Frustrated, Grace went back to her drawing, but this time she kept her head close to the paper and kept it steady so the wind wouldn't mess her up. The wind had died after that, so she was able to continue her work. She glanced up to look at the spring, but nearly had a heart attack when she saw someone was sitting in front of her, legs crossed. Her pencil went off the page, making a long line across her drawing. Her eyes were wide as she looked at him. Long red hair. Fiery. Robes of gold and crimson. It was him. Just as she remembered him. Grace was speechless. The king tilted his head ever so slightly as she reacted to him. “Welcome home, Grace.” he said with his mighty voice which made Grace shake. He took notice of his and soon her shaking stopped and she felt at ease with him there. For the second time in two days, she felt like a child again. “It...it's you,” she finally said. “I remember you...”
The king gave her a small smile. “I would hope you remember me,” he said. “You helped me a great deal when you were younger. It's nice to see you in person again. You have grown a lot.”
Grace felt her face warm and she quickly looked down to her drawing. “I.. um...” she stuttered, not knowing what to say. She wondered why he had come back. Grace looked back up at him slowly. “Why... are you here now?” she asked quietly.
“I haven't spoken to you in many years because you closed yourself off to me. But you came back here. You seek clarity. Direction. Answers. I am here for you.”
Grace was confused. He was here for her? It was true that she felt lost, but how could he help her? Grace didn't want to tell her problems to him. He couldn't help her. She didn't want to burden him with her troubles. But when she looked a him again, she melted. Maybe he could help her? She could try? She did have so many unanswered questions. Many of them where why she had turned away from him so long ago. “I..I'm.. I feel lost. I have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing.”
The king was silent as she spoke. He knew exactly what she should have been doing. “What would you like to be doing?” he asked her.
“I don't know!” she yelled, tears threatening to fall from her eyes. She was so tired of people asking her that. The girl glared up at him. “Why are you here? You didn't care when my brother died, so why do you care now?”
Atticus shifted slightly at the remark. He was expecting it. “I always cared about you. About your family. About this valley. I can not control who lives and who dies. His death was a surprise to me. It was unfortunate but I was there with you, grieving with your family.”
Grace tossed her book aside, angry with the king. “Liar! You weren't there! I couldn't even feel you there!” Grace could always feel when he was there with her. The girl stood up and turned to leave.
“Grace,” he said and she stopped. He was there at her side, hand on her shoulder. “I was always with you, even when you could not feel me with you. Even when you left the valley and went to the city, I was with you. I was there protecting you. Countless times.” More than she would ever know. Grace turned around to face him, tears now streaming down her face. In her heart she believed him. Her child-like heart believed him. Grace hugged him, burying her face in his robes. “I missed you so much,” she mumbled. Atticus gently wrapped his arms around the girl in an embrace. “And I you.” {grace-20yr, shea- 52, tora-42}

exregality is the worst friend ever. and by worst i mean she is the best. literally the best. i love her to death and I'm so thankful that she is my friend.
it's exregality's birthday.
To my best friend,
Hi. I know I wrote you a thing for your birthday last year. But it's literally all I can do. I can't draw, if I could I would do that. But I can write. Granted, not very well as you saw with my horrible, horrible one shot of two friends who very much represent us. You are the best. Literally the best. This year has been tough for us. I haven't made it easy. I thought for sure I would lose you. I thought for sure you would leave. I thought for sure. But you didn't. You are annoyingly positive and loyal when you want to be. I'm glad that you stuck around for me. I'm glad that you value our friendship so much.
I was looking for some songs and I came across one from How I Met Your Mother. And then it hit me that I figured out who you are. You are the Robin to my Lily, The Marshall to my Ted. I hope I get to see you soon. I really, really hope I do. I love you. Have a very happy birthday.
ps.
this song is for you:
