Extranormal - “La Pascualita” - 2009

“Estos comentarios son recurrentes entre las historias de los Chihuahuenses una maniquí de nombre Pasculita que pareciera cobrar vida por las noches asustando a todo el que se acerca a este sitio. Un maniquí que dicen no es como cualquier otro pues hay quien asegura que no es una figura de pasta sino un cadáver embalsamado que por las noches cambia de posición y mueve su.”

Mannequins are one of the great cliches of horror due to the combination of being a mundane object seen in one's daily life, and falling deep into the uncanny valley by their very nature. This is most clear in Chihuahua, Chihuahua state, Mexico, home of the world's most famous haunted mannequin legend, La Pascualita. Sitting in the window of the La Popular bridal boutique since 1930 is an exceptionally realistic - almost hyper-realistic - looking mannequin, so detailed so as to have veins and all the little details of the hand. This has spawned many, many urban legends.

Or she did; removed temporarily for an exhibition in Mexico City in 2019, it was later removed permanently in 2024, replaced by a infoboard. I confirmed this myself on Google Streetview. Oddly enough, it appears the store might be named "Pascualita" now, but lacks the mannequin herself? Where she is currently appears to be unknown.

Extranormal is a Mexican paranormal show that started in 2007; while information about it in English is sparse, Spanish-language Wikipedia says it kept running until 2024 but information tapers off after the first few seasons. I'm not sure when this episode aired on TV, but it was uploaded on Youtube in 2009, so I'll go with that date. Also: first late 2000s show covered means the first one with an official Youtube channel!

As the host's taxi driver says, “Tiene mucha historia por en s la leyenda de la Pascualita. Toda le gente le muchos le tienen miedo y otros le tienen respeto a la leyenda de que se mueve el lugar que en las noches sale a caminar prende las luces en fin hace muchas cosas raras aquí en el establecimiento.” Taxi drivers frequently see the mannequin go missing or change position, though he hasn't seen anything himself...

Though there are many stories, the basic one is that the mannequin was the work of the store's former owner Pascuala Esparz - and that it's the embalmed corpse of her daughter, killed by scorpion sting or spider bite before her wedding day. Her mother preserved her body, eternally wearing the dress she was supposed to wear on that day, and she's haunted it ever since. All sorts of stories have followed - that she moves when people aren't looking, that she sweats, that supernatural events follow her, and that her eyes follow you...

Of course, it's been shown many times by now that an embalmed corpse would not look like this.

We're shown bits of a Youtube video of the mannequin supposedly smiling; try as I might, I could not find it myself - admittedly videos on this topic are inundated with slop.

The store's PR manager tells us that people come there with all sorts of stories; ones about Pascualita moving, stories about it being the embalmed daughter of the former owner...

For the first time on television, they're allowed to inspect her up close (marveling at the detailed hands...)

...and watch as they swap what dresses she wears. The TV crew, of course, discovers nothing extranormal.

The store's manager notes that many brides come into the store and don't even look around - they ask for the dress la Pascualita is wearing, believing that it will be a good luck charm. Because there are also positive legends of the mannequin as a kind of folk saint - he tells the story of a young girl shot by her ex-boyfriend in front of the store, who prayed to Pascualita for salvation and lived. She returned every year to leave a votive candle in front of the mannequin (they asked her to leave them at the nearest cathedral).

La Pascualita has been an icon of Chihuahua since the 1930s, became an icon of Mexico's urban legendarium, and with the advent of the internet became a world-wide urban legend. Even though the mannequin itself has not been seen since 2024, stories still spread today about the "corpse bride" of Mexico - and they always will. Someone put up a mannequin that looked a bit too realistic ninety-six years ago, and nobody will ever forget it

So after the first vid, these two other lights shot up at a pretty fast pace. They floated around like the one in the first vid for ~30 minutes before the bottom one got suddenly brighter and disappeared. The other two stayed around for about 5 or so more minutes before vanishing at exactly 10:00pm.

Soma: Mind-related powers, psychic, telekinetic, telepathic, etc, can change up his own metabolism and proteins and stuff to heal quicker, run faster, be stronger, etc (though he can’t heal fatal stuff or outdo heroes with strength or speed or whatever as their main power)

Lesion: Body-related powers, skin, flesh, bone, muscle, keratin, etc, basically just has “akira-style body horror” type powers

Hoy es un tanto extraño. Estaba con un grupo de personas huyendo al parecer Zombies, no estoy seguro si era eso de lo que de verdad estábamos huyendo o de ejército que apareció después. De tanto correr nos refugiamos en un market, tomamos todas las provisiones que sea posible y luego huir pero en ese momento nos encuentra el ejército; le dije a mi gente que se escondan y también hice lo mismo pero ellos entraron por atrás y me atraparon. Me tenían presionado preguntándome donde estaba el resto pero yo no les decía nada, a la vez preguntando donde estaba él. En ese momento estaba dudando porque no sabia a quien se refería hasta que me dicen: "El experimento". De igual no sabia quien era o si estaba conmigo, así que negaba todo lo que decía. Ellos al no tener respuestas comenzaron a disparar a todo el establecimiento. No podía aguantar que disparasen, o aguantar tanto dolor de los gritos de mi gente; con todo eso me puse demasiado furioso que exploté, y comencé a golpear a todos ahí, lo que se hizo sorprendente es que mi fuerza era descomunal, podía matarlos con mis manos, uno por uno; cuando ya lo noté, ya había acabado con todos y me di cuenta que yo era el experimento. Yo era la persona a quien buscaban. No hice más que buscar y reunir a mi gente para volver a huir porque podían volver más así que todos fueron a una camioneta que estaba ahí pero uno aun estaba cojiendo comida, perdimos tiempo porque volvieron los tipos del ejército; no tuve más que decir que huyan los que podían y que el se quedaría conmigo. El ejército llegó, mi gente huyó y el chico quedó conmigo, no hice más que pelear con todos, tanto que no podían que empezaron a disparar como locos. Al acabar con todos me di cuneta que unas balas alcanzaron al chico, ya lo encontré muerto. Lo dejé y huí sólo. Corrí sin rumbo, huyendo de zombies que encontré después. Seguí corriendo hasta que un auto me interceptó, cuando volteé, ya estaba rodeado; no hice más que pelear. Y aquí desperté.
