[Elec Blog] My Town getting caught by the Cyclone's Rains
For those who aren't aware, I live in Chile, in the Region of Bio-Bio, which is center-south of the country.
Last week, news showed that an extratropical cyclone was about to strike, bringing intense rains.
And well, rains struck. Some raining were chill, but some are masively intense. Intense to the point of even making the ceiling rattle, loudly at times.
In a personal story, the backyards are getting flooded. The front yard was getting flooded, that the water even reached to the garage. So my mom with another neighbor had to dig the ground to redirect the water to a safer zone.
Meanwhile, the backyard is getting more water. Maybe even reaching closer and closer to touch the kitchen/dinner room door. But Today, June 12, the firemen showed up with a motor pump and sucked a good chunk of the water of the backyard to the streets.
Thankfully, I'm out of danger at the moment of writing this blog. The town I'm currently living is out of danger. The other small towns, especially those who are nearby hills and/or rivers are dealing with more problems. The intense raining caused problems like avalanches and river overflows. Today I saw the news that they had to let an house roll over the hill, due to the climate making the hill unstable.
Also, the Emergency Alert System that Chile uses to show alerts on phones and tablets (In Spanish SAE or "Sistema de Alerta de Emergencia"). showed up a lot these days. SENAPRED (El "Servicio Nacional de Prevención y Respuesta Ante Desastres". or translated as the "National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response") showed alerts. Alerts of possible river overflows and avalanches and advicing people to evacuate.
During this, I ended up finding out that my tablet can receive the SAE alerts, which is a surprise, honestly. Sometimes they do use traditional alert sound, but sometimes the noise is different, more like an alarm. I haven't recorded the alarm with that alternative sound, though.
Those alarms are useful to alert people. But those are really loud. Like, I can even hear the tablet SAE alarm from the first floor, while my tablet being at the second floor in my room. I am autistic and I'm a bit sensible towards sounds. That makes me being able to hear that alarm even when I'm at the first floor. But also since those alarms are loud, they makes me jumpy.
Those alarms are a needed double-edged sword. You need to alert people, even if the alert is unpleasant.
Today on the morning, I wanted to heat up water to put it on a thermos, just in case something happens. But my mom says that I don't have to worry about it, prefering me to stay on the second floor, knowing that I'll be safe. I love you mom so much. Even if, as you said before, you can be an idiot sometimes (when she gets annoyed or even angry), you are a genuinely good mom to me. You want me to learn and be a functional member of society. I can be an idiot sometimes, after all. But I'm not a "plant", AKA a person who's uncapable to work by themselves and they're being overprotected. Yeah, days ago I had an conversation with my mom who clarified me a lot of things. Thanks, mom. /genuinely
Back on topic, I read on WhatsApp that there was a programmed water and electricity cut off at 3 PM. I was a hoax, but I did charged my tablet, my main phone, my previous phone just in case, and a hand warmer. And my mom charged the emergency lights when something happens.
So, in my case I'm doing fine. But if you have friends on Chile who are living in places affected by this meteorological incident, please check on them.
