PSA to all authors posting on AO3 and the SquidgeWorld Archive: There’s two ways to leave your creations up without having your name attached to it.
Yes, you read that correctly. The first one is called "orphaning"... but there's no way to "unorphan" a fic. Once you've orphaned a fic, it means the work is no longer yours and your name will not be attached to the work. Meaning you can't edit the work, delete it or reclaim the work. You will lose the ownership of your work forever once you've orphaned it. Depending on what option you chose, it will look as if orphan_account or "your pseud" (orphan_acount) posted the content. The choice will affect any replies to comments you may have left as well. More information is in the link at the bottom of this post. (SquidgeWorld doesn't explicitly say orpaning is possible in its FAQ, but I personally reached out to the Archiveist today to ask that question. They confirmed the process works the same way because SquidgeWorld uses the same OTW code.)
The second option is to post a fic under the "anonymous" section. By posting or making your published work "anonymous", your name won't be publicly attached to said work (but will still appear in the "my works" section where only you can see). The big difference between orphaning a work and posting/turning a work under anonymous section is that — unlike an orphaned work — you can edit, delete or even reclaim a work under anonymous section anytime you want. You'll also still receive an email alerting you when someone gives kudos or comments on an anonymous work of yours.
As an author and a reader, I'm begging you: please, please don't delete your work(s). Maybe you hate it, think it's cringy, etc. All of those are valid reasons to wanna obliterate it from the internet. Yet you took the time to make content for the fandom, and that alone makes it valuable. If you have even one kudo, you have proof somebody liked your work. And if you don't, well...I don't know. Point is, orphaning is a way to keep things available for everyone's enjoyment, no matter how good or bad they might be. This is especially important in smaller or niche fandoms. You never know who might be watching/listening/reading/re-reading your work as a stress reliever on any given day.
Media of any form is still better than none, people, even if it's not personally to your tastes. Let's all work together to preserve (and make) as much of it as possible!✊🏻
Many thanks to @allthingswhumpyandangsty for explaining the differences so well (and alerting me to the fact that Anonymous also exists as an option). I did copy and paste part of their post in here to help explain the difference, but all credit to anything they wrote goes to them. The original post can be found here.
