What’s your opinion about eye dialects?
I'm answering this on my lunch break so I'm not sure I'll have time to get to the second part right away but I will answer it next .
I've actually been thinking about eye dialects a lot lately because in the single parents au wip Eren's daughter's speech is full of them, and I keep worrying it's going to piss people off because they'll see it as baby talk.
My personal opinion is that I typically don't mind eye dialects and even like them because they create a sense of the character for me. However, I do not like it when it is inconsistent or feels inaccurate, especially with accents. It's so easy for accents to dip into racist territory, especially when there are no rules to how the accent is expressed and the author is clearly just snapping their fingers and going, "oh, right! Time to fuck up the English real quick here to remind everyone this person isn't a native speaker!" I think eye dialects should be representative of how real people talk, with grammar and pronunciation rules that make sense. If someone doesn't want to devote the time to that, they shouldn't use them. Although, I may be biased because I have spent so much time working out the rules of Adriana's speech impediment.
Breaks over so I'd better go, but I think that's a pretty good summary of my opinion.
