Bozheena Vision by David & Shiela Glatz Via Flickr: Environmental portrait of a young Bison (Bison bison), chilling out on the side of the road in Shoshone National Forest. The Shoshone (the Eastern band, native to Wyoming and Idaho) called the Bison "Bozheena." The blurred grass in the foreground struck us as creating a dreamlike scene.
Drip Drying Polar Bear by David & Shiela Glatz Via Flickr: After taking a sunrise swim across the bay, this Polar Bear (Ursus maritimus) pauses for a moment to dry off. It's amazing how quickly their fur sheds water. In just a few seconds, the bear looked totally dry.
Brown Bear Cub Eye Contact by David & Shiela Glatz Via Flickr: While mother (in the background) fished for salmon, this spring Brown Bear (Ursus arctos) cub relaxed and watched. She even fell asleep a couple times. After she woke up and decided to join her brother, he realized there was a bunch of humans behind her. She seemed kind of surprised but paused long enough for us to capture her image. Lake Clark National Park, Alaska.
Eye Level Bearscape by David & Shiela Glatz Via Flickr: 7:35 am - we head out in the 4 wheeler. As we rode along the coast of The Cook Inlet, we spotted two small bears approaching. We got in front of them and set up. Two two-year old cubs, referred to as the "orphans," walked right past us. Apparently their mother was killed in 2016, and these cubs survived. These little guys are now heading into their second winter on their own. When this individual took "the high road" close to the tree line, we got down low, on the beach, and photographed it as it went by. Cool perspective, with the mountains and trees in the background and the bear emerging into the soft morning light. Lake Clark National Park, Alaska.
Watchful Mother Bear by David & Shiela Glatz Via Flickr: First time we've seen this mother bear at Silver Salmon Creek. She had her first litter of cubs this January or February. Here she's being a dutiful and watchful mom, keeping her eyes on the strange group of humans while her two cubs feed on grass. Haven't seen Brown Bears feeding on the grass during salmon run - this little family did it quite often. Mom was an excellent fisher, though, so she and the cubs won't be relying solely on grass to get them through the winter. Don't think that would work out so well. Lake Clark National Park, Alaska.
Mustang Colt with Heterochromia, "in explore" by David & Shiela Glatz Via Flickr: An individual with heterochromia has two different colored eyes. This young Mustang colt has this condition. His right eye is blue and his left eye is brown. Even his right eyebrow is a different color. This guy didn't stray too far from his mother very often. Here his curiosity got the best of him and he approached very close to check us out. Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary, Hot Springs, South Dakota.

The White Death by David & Shiela Glatz Via Flickr: Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) female is dialed in and focused on a vole. Since there were some photographers right behind the rodent, the owl pulled off at the last second. Otherwise the vole would have been a victim of the white death. Lots of voles up in Alberta this year. The fields were literally crawling with them. Good news for the Snowy Owl population wintering up there. These are impressive raptors, with huge wingspans (4-5 feet), especially given their rather compact body size.
