The reason Cas always looked at Dean so confused in the early saisons is, because he could feel Dean's emotiond and couldn't figure out what they meant.

In my opinion Dean REALLY liked Cas (in every way) and was attracted to Cas, but at the same time he was angry and insecure about Cas and didn't know how to feel for him.
