all of this lore pertains to the floor 100 project on AO3 !
dandy & sprout were the first two mains created for the show—intended to be the only ones—at that .
but as things continued , test after test that’d leave dandy weak and frail , sprout’s closeness made dandy impossible to isolate. every absence was noticed , every change questioned. some days sprout wouldn’t even take his eye off his friend at all , staying up as late as he could just to be sure dandy could rest through the night.
if they wanted to continue with all the experiments done on their sweet L-001 , it surely couldn’t continue like this. they knew one day sprout would know far too much , too much for a toon like himself.
so astro was introduced as a solution: someone dandy would instinctively gravitate toward , easing that bond without resistance. (astro was already a character planned for the show ; an extensive history with dandy written and scrapped far before everything taking place . only now with a newfound purpose)
as dandy’s attention shifted, sprout was gently redirected toward cosmo instead. a new toon for him to take all his fretting and dependence toward . and much unlike sprout , astro was too meek and trusting towards their higher ups to question what’d happen to dandy .

anyways some little design details !
- he has hooves
^ all the mains have an animal that their design takes inspiration from (sprout: canine , shelly: dinosaur , dandy: feline , vee: …also feline , dyle: snake) and astro gets a deer since he’s shy , quiet , and not too confrontational … also because I really like deer ! ^.^ you may be able to see in my other art and his baby render that he also has a deer tail + ears , though they’re hidden as he’s very insecure of them
- his blanket was exchanged for a robe , the sleeves are very large—easier for him to hide his four arms while still able to use them
^ shelly helped make it for him ! he struggled to let go of his blanket after the handler’s left because he associated it so strongly with austin , but the robe was not only convenient but a lot more comfortable to manage
- he (alongside every other toon in this au) use twisted astro’s base model .. they’re much taller than their canon counterparts !
^ its sooo lengthy to explain here but delilah created the toons with the intention of them all being small and cute forever (like their canon versions) so they could constantly appeal to younger audiences , but they ended up being only like that during childhood .. so they ended up growing into human sizes! its one of the reasons gardenview closed , they were a bit scared of the toons becoming so … sentient ?
im very happy with how this turned out ! i was so worried because i definitely didn’t design him with the in-game models in mind so i thought he’d look much more cluttered than this .. but i like it ! ^_^

sometimes I wonder if shelly ever blames herself for the way shanon never returned …. like ofc none of the handlers returned but based on the way others treat her + how close she was with shanon I feel like it has to be a fleeting thought every now and then that MAYBE if shelly had been just a bit more memorable shanon would’ve come back for her .. that maybe shanon really did plan on coming back but realized shelly wasn’t worth it. hm . idk i always feel like shelly’s insecurities would def lash out more internally rather than her attempting to blame or think poorly of others
