Kazumasa Yamashita, 'Kao no ie' (Face House)', Kyoto, Japan. Built in 1974 for a graphic designer who lived on the second floor. An artist has opened a studio and a shop on the first floor: creative studio and shop ooo. Here's a piece from The Architectural Review from 1975 and a short video on Face House (not very informative but it's less than 2 minutes long so there's that). A famous piece of architecture that I only discovered existed today. Sometimes the internet brings nice things into your life.

もともとグラフィックデザイナーの住居兼仕事場として建てられたという

「顔の家」。

.

ドキッとするような外観ですが、

目は窓、鼻は換気口、口は入口、という具合に、

パーツがそれぞれ、きちんと機能に合わせてあったりもするようです。

.

私が学生の頃にはまだなんとなく流行っていて影響力もあった本、

チャールズ・ジェンクス著『ポスト・モダニズムの建築言語』の中でも、

日本の「ポスト・モダニズム建築」の代表作の一つとして採り上げられていたりしました。

.

当時観たときには、あまりにも悪趣味（失礼！）で、

いくらなんでも、これではあんまりだろう、という風に思ったものですが...。

.

築50年近く、今尚こうして建っているのを観ると、

一周か二周廻って、不思議と面白く感じてしまいました。
