It can be confusing that "Face-Off" is extrapolated into so many assumptions about Rory and Jess's entire relationship; Jess didn't call Rory, he expected her to wait around for him, he saw her as a prize and then never made any effort again, and on and on...
The episodes after "Face-Off" have been brought up as evidence that these assessments aren't the whole story, most notably Lorelai telling Luke that Rory and Jess usually spend weekends together in "A Tale of Poes and Fire" and Rory and Jess arranging three dates in a row in "Happy Birthday, Baby." However, the episodes before "Face-Off" don't paint a wildly different picture. Rory and Jess both tell someone that they're leaving to meet each other in "Lorelai Out of Water." Rory tells Lorelai that she's going to spend most of a Saturday with Jess in "Swan Song," and the next scene is of them in the town square. Luke also tells Lorelai that Rory and Jess are at the diner all the time.
The one line that suggests this sort of thing possibly happened more than once is in Rory's voicemail: "This is the last weekend I spend sitting around like an idiot hoping you'll call," but Rory seems to be most upset about wanting more definite plans than meeting "later." What Rory tells Lorelai in "Say Goodnight, Gracie" seems significant: "I didn't want to be that girl and you don't want me to be that girl, but after the hockey game, I was that girl." Jess hiding his own problems and retreating to be alone when he was upset were issues that were highlighted more than once, and these are also Luke's biggest flaws when he's with Lorelai, but if Jess was constantly neglecting Rory in general, why would one day stand out from all the months they were together?
If the events of "Face-Off" really were an anomaly, the whole situation goes from zero to crisis very quickly, but that could be plausible. Rory describes herself more than once as ashamed of being "that girl" who waits around for her boyfriend even though that wasn't originally her phrasing; it was what Lorelai told her, and she remembers it for months. Instead of asking Jess what's going on, which Rory has done before, she defers to Lorelai's opinion and to gendered expectations of who's supposed to take initiative. Why? Maybe it's partly because Jess isn't the new neighbor and sort-of-friend who Rory thought should be given the benefit of the doubt anymore; he's the person she wanted more than the "perfect" Dean she "rejected" in spite of all the warnings. If anything goes wrong, even something that's very understandable for two teenagers with a lot of responsibilities, maybe she really is "a mindless idiot being led around by a guy." It all seems to be part of a vicious cycle Rory and Jess go through leading up to the end of Season 3. They trust each other less and less when they feel like the other person doesn't trust them, and the fractures from smaller incidents along the way leave them with no hope to handle the major crisis at the end. It's so much more interesting and complicated than "Jess was the jerk who never called."
