The fandom interpretation that Rory and/or fans who like Jess are captivated by the "I can fix him" trope comes up fairly often, and while there isn't really indication in the text that Rory saw Jess as someone to "fix," (because the point, according to ASP, was that "they saw each other for what they were"), the Lorelai & Jess parallels highlight how this also sidesteps the heart of Lorelai's story.

When Lorelai was a teenager, she was labeled as too disrespectful, too defiant, too troublesome, and ungrateful for the life she was supposed to have. With a turn of luck (or fate) combined with her own determination, she finally lands in a place where people accept her for her, and she thrives there for decades. The story repeatedly emphasizes that her parents' way wasn't the right way for her, even if they can't see it for more than a fleeting moment at a time. Lorelai had to grow up at lightning speed to raise her child and succeed at work, but she never had to be "fixed" or "redeemed." She keeps the "improper" manners, style, and humor she was reprimanded for in a community that loves her and she loves in turn. She's still Lorelai, who came out of a difficult, lonely childhood and did something perfectly ordinary yet completely amazing.

Jess's story follows a similar structure in so many ways; his version of Stars Hollow was just always going to be somewhere else. Unlike Richard and Emily, Luke eventually stops resenting Jess for not following the path he insisted on and is supportive of his chosen career. In AYITL, Jess is caring for his family and thriving with work that's meaningful to him and is also teasing Luke, trying to get Rory to laugh at dorky jokes, and bringing a book everywhere he goes, just like he did in S2. He's still Jess.

While the contexts are completely different, it is interesting that Lorelai and Jess are close to the same age when their respective introductions to Rory propel both of them into believing they can have a different life and belong somewhere, which leads them to embrace their own individuality and requires that they go against everything they'd been taught and learn how to trust other people. They start long-term careers (and friendships) when Mia and the publishers of Jess's book see something in them worth taking a chance on. Lorelai and Jess finding a home where they could be accepted and grow into their strengths while still fully being themselves is at the core of both of their stories. They each find direction for the anger and pain they experienced and end up with "a lovely life," as Lorelai says in the pilot, but they never needed to be "fixed" to get there.
