Birthday resolves: Personal and Career Goals for 2013

I'm not one for making New Year's Resolutions. But another event also seems to roll around every year or so at about the same time - my birthday. And one thing I try to do every year or so at and around my birthday is reflect on the year that I've just had and look forward to the year ahead, thinking about what I want to accomplish and work on between this birthday and the next.

My most recent birthday just recently passed, and I thought I might use the occasion to ruminate a bit on my goals for the rest of 2012 and 2013.

PERSONAL GOALS

Tune into others more. 

I'm always impressed by others who seem to demonstrate the quality of easy empathy - those who seem to pick up quickly on co-workers who are having a bad day or tune into the types of difficulties others are having, and can then respond with a thoughtful response that will help them get back on track. I admire those who can "read the room" and quickly respond naturally to the ebb and flow of the social situation. This isn't something that comes naturally to me. Left to my own devices, I'm more apt to "live in my own head" and think about/ruminate on my own thoughts or reactions to a given set of circumstances, and only as a secondary thought "put myself in someone else's shoes" and think about how the situation may be impacting them, or how they may be perceiving the situation. I've long realized that there are limitations imposed by that approach. And I want to make a concerted effort to be more attuned to the situations and perspectives of those around me. 

I guess you'd say I want to work on increasing my emotional intelligence over the course of the next year. This means:

Reaching out to people more more often.

Talking to people more often.

Listening to people more often (whether they're talking to me or not). 

Improve my ability to clue into body language and other signals that people may be giving off. 

Being generally more open to people.

We'll see how I do ...

This kind of goes hand in hand with the following:

Increased awareness of my surroundings

That tendency to live in my head means I can not just miss how my friends and co-workers are perceiving/reacting to a situation, but can also miss out on the situation itself - or overlook pertinent details about the situation. 

I'd like to change that. 

Now, whether that means developing Sherlock Holmes-like powers of intuition, I cannot say (thought wouldn't that be a nice bonus?), but I can say that, over the course of the next year, I'd like to work on developing the following habits:

Taking purposeful note of environments (both from a physical perspective - buildings, rooms, meetings, etc., as well as an emotional/situational one (see above)) as I enter them.

Take note of changes to environments that I am already familiar with.

To put a UX spin on things, I think it would be interesting to make note (and take notes), every time I enter a place I haven't been before (business, retail environment, meetings with people I haven't met with before, or new sets of people I haven't met with before) and note both what works well about the "user experience of that environment" and also how that experience could be improved upon.

Value curiosity over caution. 

There's a bit of a thematic consistency going on with my birthday resolves, I see, but what I mean by this is I have a tendency to hesitate and think things through, sometimes (too often) overly so, before taking action on them. I want to work on changing this over the course of the next year, so my first reaction becomes to help rather than to hesitate. I want to think about how my decisions effect others rather than dwelling on my own indecisiveness. Ask 'what does do-and-so need from this situation?' rather than 'how does this decision effect me? What would my preference be in this situation?'  Perhaps another way of looking at this goal is to challenge myself to ask 'What would be the best outcome coming out of this situation?' and 'How can I most proactively help to bring that outcome about?' rather than launching into a series of 'if-then' considerations, which is my usual wont.

Write more.

This is always a goal of mine. I've typically got a number of pieces of writing, fiction and non-fiction, "in the works" as they say, at any given time. And I want to spend more time working on those pieces over the coming year, and also, bringing some of those pieces to fruition.

JOB GOALS

Here are some of the things I am hoping to explore next year that have more of a direct bearing on what I do on a day-to-day basis.  

Embrace and implement principles of Agile creativity into the work place here.

The concept of "Agile Creativity" is one that Google began to espouse earlier this year (see http://www.thinkwithgoogle.com/insights/featured/agile-creativity/) and their recommended approach incorporates a mindset that resonates pretty strongly with several of my co-workers and I.

As part of the natural evolution of the agency I've worked at, we've started to incorporate these sorts of tactics into our approach and process. BBDO Atlanta's digital analytics group, for instance, has grown by leaps and bounds in the past two and half years. And we're getting better here at concepting, fleshing out and building out ideas that are bigger or at least different than the TV and print campaigns that this office is historically rooted in.

My co-worker Gibran Soto has initiated an HTML 5 tutorial training session to get more of us comfortable in the languages that are projects are built in. We just started that last week and it has already had some nice dividends. Plans are afoot to roll that sort of hands-on training to other groups within the larger agency next year.

As part of this "agile" approach, we've also initiated the first of what we hope will be at least semi-regular hackathon sessions here at BBDO Atlanta to iterate on and build out solutions that aren't derived from specific client asks and that give us a chance to build things and test out ideas outside of our normal course of business. We've had a couple sessions to kick around ideas, and though things have stalled out a bit due to the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays and everyone's work and vacation schedules, this is something I want to bring back after the first of the year.

Whether a BBDO Atlanta hackathon tradition grabs hold or not, I think the goal and the plan is to keep trying new things, new approaches, new ways of doing things. Some of these ideas and approaches will pan out. Some of them won't. But they'll all help us explore new skill sets and build on our skills. They'll help us look at challenges in new ways. I think we'll get enough out of the attempts to make these exercises worthwhile, whatever the "official" outcome.

There's a lot of momentum and excitement around the idea of revisiting how we approach our work. I think it's going to be an interesting 2013.

Another goal of mine is to conduct regular, informal peer review lunches with my co-workers.

This was an idea inspired by the workshop I participated on back in October, lead by Kim Godwin and focused on developing User Experience leadership within your organization. (Kim is the author of the book, Designing for the Digital Age, and this info is from a bio of her posted online: "She spent most of the last decade as Vice-President, Design and General Manager at Cooper, leading an integrated practice of interaction, visual, and industrial designers, as well as the development of the acclaimed Cooper U design curriculum. Previously, she was an in-house creative director. Kim is currently consulting with a variety of clients on integrating design into their organizations.")

Actually, my co-worker, Gibran Soto, and I had a peer-to-peer lunch just before the holidays. We chatted, informally, about our strengths and weaknesses and what we wanted to work on, individually and as part of the digital team, for 2013. It went well, I think -- the hour went by very fast, which is a good sign -- and it's something I am hoping to do more of -- and with more folks -- this coming year.

Do more "Managing up" and "Managing Out"

I've never been what you might call adept at what you might call that "process of consciously working with your boss to obtain the best possible results for you, your boss, and your organization." My general philosophy and approach throughout my career has been to do my job in a way that gives those above me the confidence that I know what I am doing - that they can trust that whatever work I have been assigned or is in front of me will get done, and get done well, basically, that they don't have to worry about me, or others on my team.

And this approach has served me pretty well throughout my career. What it can mean, though, is that those above me don't often know what I am working on, or how I go about getting done what I do. Especially in a field like UX where it is likely that my immediate supervisors (and almost a guarantee that managers in other departments) have limited experience or first-hand knowledge of what goes into building out user experience documentation. 

Despite the advice from Mike Myatt on Forbes.com, I want to spend more time in the coming year in reaching out to the managers at work, to clue them in on what we're working on and how we're going about that work. And not just the manager I report to, but to others in the agency.

Myatt's advice on managing up is not to do it, though he seems to take issue with the idea of "managing your boss," as synonymous with manipulating your boss and in his post, he states, "the best way to be looked upon favorably by those you report to is not through various charades and other forms of skulduggery, but by simply doing your job and serving them well." Hard to argue with that ...

I'm not interested in manipulating my boss. I wouldn't be good at it if I tried. I have little patience for office politics either. But I want to try and have more conversations about what it is I and those on my team do on a daily basis, with more people at the agency, beyond (but not excluding) the "usual suspects" on the digital team.

Build up my technical skills

I am a proponent of continuous learning, and I want to use the coming year to broaden my skill set with the technical tools of the UX trade. I want to explore different ways of creating user experience documentation, whether that's deepening my experience with a tool I've used occasionally or even semi-regularly, or looking at entirely new ways of approaching user experience.

The great thing is that there are SO many great educational resources available for those willing to take the time to explore them.

Some examples of what I am talking about:

Facebook Edge Training 

Representatives from Facebook were recently in the office and told us about a new addition to the Facebook Studio resources. Facebook Studio is a space set up by Facebook to showcase successful social marketing efforts, provide resources to agencies, etc. Facebook Edge is a new component to that space that provides education on the platform itself.  Through Facebook Edge, you can get the download on Facebook Pages, Advertising, and Technology. Facebook has created various educational "modules" that you can run through to receive information on various aspects of their platform. Site visits More on this likely in a future post, but there's an article Jared Spool posted to the UIE blog a year or so back on "Why I Love Taking Teams on Field Visits" -- http://www.uie.com/articles/teams_field_visits/ that has served as a source of inspiration to me. 

It's basically a call to "get out in the field" and observe and interact with your customers in the places and environments where they are interacting with your product(s). 

I want to do more site visiting in 2013. And I want to bring some of my co-workers with me.

Work on career development at least one hour per week.

Whether it is beefing up on my technical skills by taking an online course, or attending a UX networking event here in Atlanta, I want to make a concerted effort to devote at least a little bit of time every week to stepping outside of the day-to-day and concentrate on getting better at what I do. An hour a week shouldn't be too hard, right? I think it is going to be interesting to look back at this list over the course of 2013, and see how I address these goals. Putting this post together has gotten me excited about the year ahead. Onward!

Facebook settles with FTC on privacy complaints :: BtoB Magazine

Facebook, long criticized for failures to safeguard users' private data, has settled with the Federal Trade Commission over complaints that the social site overrode users' own privacy settings and shared users' information with advertisers.

Among the privacy abuses alleged by the FTC was that Facebook changed its website without notice so certain information users designated as private (such as their friends lists) was made public; shared private information with third parties despite promises it would not; claimed to have implemented security safeguards it did not; and allowed access to “deactivated” users' data after claiming it would be deleted.

According to the settlement, Facebook is barred from making further deceptive privacy claims; must get users' approval before changing the way it shares personal data; and must obtain periodic assessments of its privacy practices by independent auditors for the next 20 years. The FTC did not levy a financial penalty against Facebook.
