Clucking and preening in unguarded triumph

Waiting around for a fellow to ask her reason

to preen so openly, in brash defiance to order,

Her sigh deepened into a frown marring the

She confessed her heart to mother like she

did just a while before with her father, telling them

finally just how unhappy the herd school made her,

how she wanted to stay at the pass forever,

not train to perform at some human zoo,

As she spoke the tremor in her voice stilled

She stared ahead, brave as any man of the herd

Mother let her recount her tale, barely giving away

A hint of her true feeling, she knew her daughter

Better, after all, so she let the balloon fill up,

Before POP! Popping it with her insightful

Doubts, fears intended to confuse her naive little girl

“You will miss your friends, they’ll have all the fun”,

“In ten years when your waddle becomes a slow

crawl, you’ll regret not having any help around”

If I have a garden

White roses.. pink ones too

Hollyhocks and starflowers aplenty,

scores of dandelions in tribute,

Jasmine, laurels, orange tulips,

and of course, lilies of the

valley scattered amongst them-

a dazzling array of colors.

I’ve come to realize the need

for more than just these pretty,

striking flowers; herbs to create

tranquility, offset the vibrance,

basil, fennel, a hint of coriander,

heady mixes of dill, thyme,

fennel and fragrant rosemary.

And funnily enough- weeds,

there are few that nourish the

soil, repel pests and help the

garden bloom to its brim,

there are some that do nothing

at all, though I’d let them be too,

maybe they need the garden

more than it needs them.

If I have a garden, I’d grow them

all, frolic amongst the flowers,

smelling scents of the herbs,

caressing the hardy weeds-

impartial as a mother’s love is.

If I have a garden, I’d work

at nurturing it’s balance, and

ensure it blooms in eternal spring.
