As the government shutdown continues its stretch as the longest in U.S. history, claims on who is and isn’t affected, and everything in between, have been called into question. If you still have some lingering questions, we tackled many of them here and here. But now, a viral Facebook post is alleging that millions of undocumented immigrants have received checks from the government while federal workers remain unpaid. One post claiming this, shared on Jan. 20, has been shared more than 4,100 times. An identical one, posted a day later, has racked up more than 3,200 shares.
It is difficult to imagine something bad happening without also imagining people politicizing it for the benefit of those who share their views. Whether rightly or wrongly, both the left (mass shooting --> “Get rid of the guns!”) and the right (terrorist attack --> “Get rid of the Muslims!”) share this particular trait.
Sometimes, however, those politicizing a tragedy aren’t 100% truthful. (Shocking, isn‘t it?) In this case, during the recent government shutdown anti-immigrant forces claimed (falsely) that “18 Million Illegal Immigrants got their government checks this month” while federal workers remained unpaid. Because there may well be another shutdown in a couple of weeks, it’s worth addressing this “Pants on Fire!” lie.
There are “legal restrictions that limit immigrants from receiving most federal benefits. ... Undocume[n]ted immigrants are ineligible to receive the following federal benefits: the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program), non-emergency Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and its precursor, Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC).”
“It would be impossible for 18 million undocumented immigrants to receive checks from the government, because there are only approximately 11 million living in the country.”
In his much publicized visit to Iowa, President Donald Trump made a few false and misleading statements about agricultural exports.
Liar-in-Chief: “There’s somebody selling beef over there [Japan]. They haven’t bought our beef since the year 2000.”
Reality: “U.S. beef exports to Japan have exceeded $1 billion every year since 2012, and Japan has been the largest export market for U.S. beef since 2013.”
Misleader-in-Chief: “In the last two years of the previous administration, farm income plummeted by more than $30 billion, and agricultural exports dropped by over $22 billion. Did you know that? Did you know that? You’ll be hearing it a lot over the next little while.”
Reality: “The value of agricultural exports grew under Obama. Calendar-year figures from the USDA show that under former President George W. Bush the annual average was $70.8 billion, and it was $131.8 billion under Obama – a clear upward trend. ... Export values dropped from 2014, when they hit their peak of $150 billion, to 2015, when they were $133 billion. ... about 75 percent of the decrease from 2014 to 2015 was because of declining commodity prices ... 2016 was a record year for US soybean and corn exports (58 and 56 million metric tons, respectively, compared to 50 million metric tons each in 2014), even though the 2016 value of these exports fell short of 2014 values. ... Since Trump took office, the value of exports edged up a bit – to $138 billion in 2017 and $139 billion in 2018, according to data from the USDA. The 2018 figure is just $4 billion higher than exports in 2016.The average monthly agricultural export value in Obama’s last year in office was $11.2 billion, and it has averaged $11.5 billion over the past 12 months under Trump.”
More reality: Net farm income “has been on a general upward trend since 2003. Farm income did drop by about $30 billion, as Trump said, from 2014 to 2016, when net farm income was $61.5 billion. But that came after an increase from 2009, the year Obama took office, until 2013, when it hit a peak of $123.4 billion. ... Farm income during the Trump administration has fluctuated — rising in 2017 to $75.2 billion, dropping to a projected $63.1 billion in 2018 and edging back up to a projected $69.4 billion in 2019.”
Liar-in-Chief: “How bad was NAFTA — what they did to you with NAFTA? And that’s why, for 15 years, you’ve been going — that and other reasons. That’s why the farmer has been hurt so badly over a 15-year period.”
Reality: “The share of U.S. agricultural exports to Canada and Mexico has doubled since NAFTA took effect. ... the USDA has a chart on its website that shows NAFTA has had more of an impact — in terms of export value — than any other trade agreement.”

Indoctrination instead of information
During the last significant political alignment, conservative Democrats left their party to join the Reagan Revolution. Many had been supporting or voting with the increasingly conservative GOP on most issues for years. Southern Congressmen, a US Senator, and a handful of previously Democratic thinkers like William Bennett left the party. The party, though, stayed pretty much intact, just more…
