From Failbooks to Fanatic: My Hilarious Journey into the Wild World of K-Pop!

Well, like many in Germany, your first K-Pop idol was probably PSY and his "Gangnam Style," and maybe later his song "Gentleman" as well. And, it was no different for me. Except back then, I had no clue about K-Pop, and I didn't even perceive PSY as a K-Pop idol. He was just that Korean guy with two damn good songs.

Since it's relevant, let me share some interesting facts about him. For years, he was a mystery to me, if you can call it that, and I'll shed a little light on the matter.

PSY is now 45 years old, still active in music, and married. He is signed to YG Entertainment, which is interesting to me because my favorite girl group, BLACKPINK, is also under that label.

"Gangnam Style" was released in 2012 and brought him international fame. It's been a good eleven years since that song came out.

I don't actively listen to him, but apart from his older songs, I enjoy his newer tracks like "DADDY" and "THAT THAT."

Enough digressions, let's get back to the topic: How did I consciously discover K-Pop? How did I realize it was K-Pop?

Well, it all started with Wattpad, but not even with a book related to K-Pop. It was a so-called failbook that mainly focused on poorly written One Direction fan fictions. I hadn't even listened to the band, but I had a brief phase where I mocked them, but it lasted only a few days. Anyway, the author always mentioned EXO in relation to K-Pop.

At some point, I Googled the group, and their songs "Lotto" and "Monster" immediately captivated me. That was several years ago, and I think those were their latest songs at the time. I liked the darkness of their music videos.

But eventually, my interest in them faded. I can't even remember why exactly; it just didn't match my taste anymore.

Nowadays, I can only name two or three songs of theirs that I still like, and one of them is "Rover," which is a solo by member Kai.

It's also interesting to note that, similar to PSY from the previous video, EXO also has a connection to BLACKPINK. Kai and Jennie were in a relationship for a short time in 2019.

Vom Failbook zum Fanatiker: Meine urkomische Reise in die wilde Welt des K-Pop!

Nun, wie viele in Deutschland, war euer erstes K-Pop-Idol wahrscheinlich PSY und sein Gangnam Style, später vielleicht auch noch sein Song Gantleman. Und, auch bei mir war das nicht anders. Nur, dass ich damals vom K-Pop überhaupt noch keine Ahnung hatte und PSY deswegen auch noch nicht als K-Pop-Idol wahrgenommen habe. Er war für mich halt einfach dieser Koreaner mit den zwei verdammt guten Songs.

Weil es gerade passend ist, möchte ich hier ein paar interessante Fakten über ihn einbringen, für mich war er jahrelang ja ein Mysterium, wenn man es so nennen kann und ich bringeal bisschen Licht ins Dunkle.

PSY ist mittlerweile 45 Jahre alt, immer noch aktiv in der Musik und verheiratet. Unteranderem ist er bei YG Entertainment unter Vertrag und ja, das finde ich deswegen interessant, weil auch meine Lieblings Girlgroup BLACKPINK bei diesem Label ist.

Gangnam Style wurde 2012 veröffentlicht, dieser Song brachte ihm internationale Bekanntheit und der Song ist mittlerweile gut elf Jahre alt.

Ich höre ihn nicht aktiv, aber neben seinen älteren beiden Song, feiere ich von seinem neueren Song "DADDY" und "THAT THAT".

So, genug der Ausschweife, kommen wir zurück zum Thema: Wie habe ich bewusst zum K-Pop gefunden? Also, wie habe ich den K-Pop für mich entdeckt und wirklich gewusst, dass es sich um K-Pop handelt.

Nun ja, durch Wattpad und eigentlich nicht mal durch ein Buch, was mit K-Pop zu tun hatte. Sondern durch ein sogenanntes Failbuch, welches sich hauptsächlich mit schelchten One Direktion Fanfiktions befasst. Ich habe die nicht mal gehört, hatte aber eine ganz kurze Phase, wo ich sie gefertigt hat, aber nicht mehr als ein paar Tage. Auf jeden Fall, hat die Autorin damals immer EXO erwähnt, im Zusammenhang mit K-Pop.

Irgendwann habe ich die Gruppe mal gegoogelt und ihre Songs Lotto und Monster haben mich damals sofort gefangen. Das Ganze ist jetzt schon einige Jahre her und ich glaubte, damals waren das so ihre aktuellen Songs. Ich mochte die Düsterkeit ihrer Musikvideos.

Doch irgendwann hat es für mich mit ihnen aufgehört, ich weiß nicht mal mehr warum, es hat halt irgendwie nicht mehr mein Geschmack getroffen.

Mittlerweile, kann ich nur noch zwei oder drei Songs von ihnen nennen, welche ich gut finde und einer davon ist Rover, welcher ein Solo des Mitglieds Kai ist.

Interessant anzumerken, ist auch, dass ähnlich wie PSY aus dem letzten Video, auch EXO einen Zusammenhang mit BLACKPINK haben. Kai und Jennie waren 2019 für kurze Zeit in eine Beziehung.
