Common or Not-So-Common Sense
Most would think being nice to your date's friend is common sense especially when your date is also there. Apparently, some lack said common sense. I like to think I have good intuition when it comes to guys and I'm not the type to string someone along just for the heck of it. Most if the time if there's food involved, I would be there in a heartbeat. And in this case, my ever hungry tummy is to blame. I don't understand how one can be constantly hungry, but that's me. Forever cursed with the hungry gene. (The high metabolism and skinny gene is no where to be found.)
Okay, back to the common sense thing.
There was once when a guy who I met through a coworker (I friend-zoned him almost immediately as it was a bit confusing who my coworker liked) asked me to go grab oysters after work one weekend. I had nothing planned for the evening and figured why not. Only after agreeing and a few more texts back and forth that I realized he may be thinking of our food run as a date. (I know, I'm a bit slow sometimes =.=) Nonetheless, I wasn't going to let that get in the way of my grumbling tummy, so I devised a plan to let him down easily. I managed to convince my gay best friend to join. (Okay, so I may had left out the potential date part until after he agreed. But at least I told him right?) I didn't want to ambush le date, so I did ask for permission to +1. He agreed, but a couple of minutes later, asked what I would had done if he said no. That pretty much confirmed my suspicions. So come dinner time, I met up with my bestie after work and we both head towards the oyster bar. I wasn't really dressing down (which to me would be jeans and t-shirt), but apparently le date thought so. First thing after the initial greetings he said: whoa you really dressed down. =/ ummm okay? Was I supposed to dress up to an oyster bar at the far west end of the city where it did look a bit shady in some areas. I wasn't even wearing jeans and t-shirt. I was wearing tights and a summer dress. Fail #1.
The place was busy, so they sat us at the bar and told us they'll move us when a booth opens up. Fine with me. Now le date was already sitting at the bar. There was a seat to his right and a seat to his left. After introducing him to my bestie, he takes a seat... in the middle. I'm cool with separating me and my bestie, but what happens next was just plain rude. He spent a good 30 minutes before the food came talking about himself, occasionally asking me questions and had his back to my bestie, completely ignoring his existent. Even with the design of a bar and having everyone sitting in a row, I find this unacceptable. Occasionally, I had to move and peer past le date to engage my bestie in the conversation, to which le date turns for a brief 3 seconds and goes back to talking about himself with me. Fail #2
After dinner, the bill comes and the server informs us that she was unable to split the bill evenly. The fries we shared was placed on my bestie's bill. Le date hands my bestie $1. The fries, my dear friends, were $4.99 plus tax. And between the three of us, at least put down 1.75. Fail #3
I was still hungry, but I wasn't going to give le date a chance to spend more time with me. I mean with the way the night went, he barely passes for a friend. Unfortunately, my bestie left us to commute uptown and I had to endure the longest 30 min subway ride back to my care with le date.
Needless to say, there was no second dinner.
