Picture this with me for a second. College Prof Qrow getting gently bullied into an inter city penpal setup (slightly buoyed by the fact that he can chose to only recieve a pal around his age and finally make a friend acquaintance that isn't through work or family) matching with Clover who, incidentally enough had similar reasons but less people pushing him to join in

The thought of a story told through the things they chose to tell each other, the words they put to ink and paper, they way they put them down, later the postcards or trinkets that made them think of the other enough to send along.

They trade emails just in time to transition to part 2. Qrow, a touch tired of the same place constantly, temporarily transferring to do a stint at Atlas University. Initially he plans to surprise the other but uh. Chickens out as the case may be and so we see a secondary plot line dividing the things he sees of Clover on campus and the words they still exchange via mail. (I'm torn between Qrow having mentioned that he wouldn't be lecturing in his home turf for a whole so they don't do physical mail for a bit OR he sets it up so anything addressed to him&his home address gets auto rerouted to a po box in atlas. It's fiction I can do what I want)

Fun tidbit ideas

Clover with fancy stationary and a four leaf clover wax seal

The dorkiest fuvking postcards w/ either really philosophical quotes across the back or fucking. Misspelling mockery that was in the other's previous letter

The penpal system working with jokey aliases as the names given would be hilarious

Clover is Sorrel because at a glance they're very similar and also plant jokes

Qrow is either Crow spelled correctly or some other corvid. Magpie? Or just Blackbird

Bonus content in letters they never sent, poetry they haven't shared (yet)

Does Clover send Qrow a black feather quill as a joke?

Absolutely

Climactic moment where Qrow definitely wrote a love letter that he never sent but did get through putting Clove's name and address on it enough that when one of the girls finds it stealing one of his jackets they just shrug, slap a stamp on it and send it along

It happens to arrive just before Clover leaves for a coffee date he's gently coaxed the skittish visiting professor into

Another 2 options point.

1- He pockets the letter and then goes to sit and read it at the coffee shop bc he's 15 minutes early to everything anyway so Qrow spots him with a letter before coming over to see why he looks so shell shocked before promptly going white with mild panic

2- Or Clover reads it in his apartment before going to the coffee date anyway, dazed and thrilled and shaking and a little sorry as he spills his guts to Qrow about this guy he's been talking to for ages but he never thought the other was into him and gods this is embarrassing but !!!!!!!!!!!!!

And Qrow's just kind of sitting there like ah. The fuck?

There are so many branches of this that could be taken because Qrow not immediately knowing that Clover is talking about him would be a gut wrenching bit of misunderstanding

Or Clover mentioned him but Qrow failing to bring up that the penpal was him

Also worldbuilding

Ruby is a dual enrollment student, prove me wrong

Clover is either a guidance counselor, an arts prof, or librarian

Qrow profs for either mythology, lit, or physics but like. The mind breaking theoretical physics shit.

Ace ops-TAs? RAs? Various tutors that Clover generally refers students to? Idk I'm v tired

The idea of Ruby being on one of those guided tour things schools do sometimes but she spots her uncle for the first time in months and immediately launches herself at him

Yang being on one of Beacons sports teams so Qrow showing up at the Atlas v. Beacon game in Atlas is hilarious to me
