The first organization I would like to speak on/highlight is Daughters of Cambodia. This is an organization myself and a few of the students in the Forensic and Legal Psychology study abroad program came across while overseas. They are a faith based group of “non profit social enterprises operating in Phnom Penh” according to their website. This organization reaches out to those trapped in the sex-trafficking and sex-exploitation in Cambodia, and provides an opportunity to leave the trade should an individual choose. In addition to training individuals (yes, men, women, and even transgendered) on new sets of skills to use in their new jobs, survivors are provided daycare, medical treatment, counseling, life-skills classes. Jobs provided by non-profit businesses are all fair-trade!
Here is a link to their page for more information and to donate to this organization: http://daughtersofcambodia.org/
Effects so far: Daughters has 5 businesses including a Sewing Room, a café (Sugar ‘n Spice), Women’s Spa, Silk Screen Printing, and Jewelry Making, all of which provide higher salaries than other comparable businesses and good work conditions.
Shown in the photo above (items I purchased from Daughters of Cambodia): a women’s tee that reads “Free to follow my Dreams” and hand-made earrings.
