Unfortunately, there are three to worry about currently.

The Old Trails fire, which is northwest of the city, cutting through the North Indian Trail and Balboa/South Indian Trail. This fire broke out Saturday, the first of August, just before noon. Currently, the fire is 2500 acres, is 0% contained. Though, more of my sources say “unknown % containment”, so there might be some successes that just haven’t hit the media yet.

The Autumn Lane fire, further northwest than Old Trails, up by the Nine Mile Falls/Suncrest area, also broke out on the first of August. 1200 acres burned, also 0% contained.

Finally, the Fairview Fire. Northeast of the city this time, straddling the Orchard Prairie and Mead neighborhoods. This fire is 980 acres burned, and also 0% contained.

Live in the evac zone for the Fairview Fire in California. Cops are going door to door and warning people to be ready for quick evac in case the winds shift.

Living Free Animal Sanctuary and the Fairview Fire (California)

One of my favorite places/destinations in the Palm Springs area is the Living Free Animal Sanctuary in Mountain Center, California. (We visit when we can, and contribute $$$.) It’s up the mountains toward Idyllwild, putting it in harm’s way for wildfires and other bad things. I was thinking about them when this Fairview fire erupted. Back in 2018, with another fire (I think it was called the Cranston fire), they had to evacuate the entire campus/facility of all the dogs, cats, horses, and other animals because the fire was creeping toward them. They got all the animals into safety, and the fire didn’t scorch them. Eventually, they brought the animals back, and all was good. It seems like the Fairview fire won’t be a bother, so long as the winds stay easterly. Here’s what I learned from Living Free staff today, with a map and a couple of photos taken from the sanctuary campus:

Southern California utility responsible for deadly 2022 fire, state officials say.(Washington Post)

One of California’s largest utilities is responsible for a blaze that killed two people attempting to flee a fast-moving 2022 fire near Hemet, southeast of Los Angeles, according to a report from the state’s Department of Forestry and Fire Protection obtained by The Washington Post.

Southern California Edison has previously denied any allegations of its involvement in the Fairview Fire, which ignited Sept. 5, 2022, and burned more than 28,000 acres and destroyed dozens of structures while displacing tens of thousands of residents.

The report, which has not yet been made public, determined that because of a sag in one of SCE’s electrical lines near Fairview Avenue in Hemet, the wire came into contact with a communication line below it and caused a flurry of sparks, igniting flammable vegetation nearby.

The California Public Utilities Commission encourages utilities to temporarily shut down power to specific areas at risk of a wildfire, known as a public safety power shutoff. But despite the presence of strong winds and extreme heat conditions ripe for an inferno, the Cal Firereport said, SCE’s power lines remained energized that day.

“It was determined the SCE energized overhead electrical line contacted a Frontier communication line that was suspended underneath the electrical lines,” the report states. “This caused a shower of sparks, which caused the fire.”

David Eisenhauer, a spokesperson for SCE, said Wednesday that the company “cooperated with Cal Fire during its review of the fire, and we’re examining their latest report.”

Wildfire near Hemet becomes California's largest blaze and Tropical Storm Kay could make things worse

The Fairview fire, which has burned 27,463 acres and is only 5% contained, could intensify because of the expected strong winds and storms from Tropical Storm Kay, fire officials said.

The wildfire raging near Hemet has burned 27,463 acres with only 5% contained as of Friday morning, and fire officials worry strong winds and storms from Tropical Storm Kay could further intensify California’s largest blaze of the year — and bring the added danger of flooding and lightning to the area.

Almost 24,000 people from Hemet to Temecula are under evacuation orders as the Fairview fire continues to spread, growing almost 4,000 acres since Thursday evening, Cal Fire Capt. Richard Cordova said Friday morning. At least two people have died in the fire, one has been injured and 12 homes have been destroyed, according to fire officials.

The Fairview fire is now more than 14,000 acres larger than the Oak fire, which threatened Yosemite National Park earlier this summer and had been the state’s largest wildfire this season.

Cordova said the incoming storm could dump rain on the fire — which would greatly help firefighting — but the precipitation could also remain east of the flames, which would instead continue to blow major winds toward the wildfire.

“It’s going to be a hit or miss,” Cordova said. “It all depends on if that system comes further west; right now it’s kind of unpredictable.”
