Fairy school starter

Aisha walked into the school courtyard from the breakfast hall and saw someone who didn’t seem to be a student.

“Hello,” she said. “Do you want to study here?”

Worldbuilding Entry #1: Fairy School

The fairy school, at its inception, was the only international school available for fairies. It had no official name for a long time. It would later be named “Calpurnia’s School For Fairies”, after its founder, even thought it was long after she had passed.

The school in its first iteration consisted of two rings of underground rooms, with an outdoor courtyard in the middle. It was protected by spells that could only be opened by a password. The rooms included dorms, a library, a cafeteria, an amphitheater, offices, and various specialized and multi-purpose rooms for teaching.

The school was built to teach fairies how to use and control their magic. Due to the extreme specialization and diversity of the fairies’ powers, the curriculum was very broad. Fairies came from all over the galaxy.

Worldbuilding Fact #1

There was often quite a bit of wildlife around the fairy school, due to the area having a supply of water and some vegetation. Being desert animals, most of them were extremely poisonous, and the school nurse kept a supply of antidotes. Most of these animals were small burrowing animals and creepy-crawlies. Sometimes they would get reptiles, sharp-beaked birds, or larger beasts.

In the far future, when the school was renovated and improved, it had several greenhouses and even a small menagerie. Around the school were magical safeguards against dangerous animals.

Fairy School Subjects

Magic at Calpurnia’s fairy school is divided into two broad categories: generic and specific. Generic magic classes can be taken by any student. Specific magic classes are chosen depending on the fairy’s specific type of magic. The classes listed below are in the generic category.

Compulsory subjects:

Essential Magic – basic magic

Magic Control – how to conjure, harness, transform, shield from, or redirect magic

Material Conjuration and Manipulation – magic dealing with concrete objects

Bonding Magic – telepathy, coordinated magic, merging

Magical Plants and Animals – magic dealing with plants and animals

Magical Communication – magic concerning reading, writing, and communication

Optional subjects:

Projection – astral projection, illusions

Jinxes – spells for causing harm  

Magical Languages – languages important in the history of magic

Divination – fortune-telling

Time – magic concerning time manipulation  

Magical Philosophy – the reasoning and knowledge behind magic
