Wing au: so there’s this process called imping and it’s where birds are given prosthetic feathers. Imagine after Amity’s wings are clipped Luz goes “yo what if you get functional prosthetic feathers” but imping requires donor feathers so Luz and friends donate some of their feathers and Amity just dies from their kindness -nerd anon

Okay but thats so cute?? I love it??? Everyone donates some of their feathers so they can still somewhat fly but still make sure Amity is able to. They have to physically stop Luz before she plucks enough feathers to render near-unable to fly for the next few weeks. Amity gets those feathers slapped on and it looks a bit weird and wonky and its not the same flying shes used to but bold of you to assume she cares!! Shes boutta cry from all they doing for her and is just THRILLED to b able to try and fly again. she don’t care how weird her wings look they from her friends n fambly (found family bitch) and thats all that matters

On the original Tooth costume I couldn’t think of a good way to make big durable tail feathers other then to use printed fabric with curtain wire running through the middle. They have certainly worked well and survived six years of use with no signs of wear at all. But I was niggled because they weren’t ‘frondy’ like in the reference picture above. I looked at other fake feather ideas and none of them really met the requirements of size, realism, frondiness and durability. So the other evening I had an idea, and here they are! Aren't they just perfect? Each one takes about half an hour to make and you can make them in any length you like. These ones are about 30″ long, which is pretty big as feathers go. And they are flexible yet quite tough and water resistant (should Tooth ever feel like going for a paddle).

Once I’ve painted them I will post a tutorial on YouTube and of course I will share the link on my page here. Stay tuned to see how to make these awesome big feathers!

Punk anon but now I am focused on bird people. Ok Luz notices Amity has stopped being as expressive with her wings and that she is holding them in the regal stance again and she questions Amity about it but Amity deflects and avoids the question. It isn't until someone touches Amity's wings and she flares them out of instinct and it is revealed they are clipped, bonus angst points if it was in an area with a lot of other students.

Bold of you to assume her parents don’t give her fake feathers so it looks normal. But considering Luz has met Lilith before and knows that fake feathers look a lot longer and brighter, and considering she HAS a primary from Amity, she notices. And fake feathers are pretty hard to secure in, and you Know Amity wouldn’t put in that much effort bc she’s already rushing to get to school and shouldn’t be using her wings that much anyway.

So she gets startled or angry and she flares out her wings, causing a few of the fake feathers to fall out. The kids in the area are all looking because Amity flaring her wings is still a spectacle. The holes in her primary feathers are seen and Amity is frozen on the spot. She tucks her wings right back down, petrified and looking like she’s on the brink of a panic attack. Luz picks up a feather, realizes its fake, and looks up at Amity with a shocked and horrified expression. Amity runs. On any other day, she would’ve flown.

Three in a row! On the left is the ostrich feather on the original costume. It’s scary how much it has faded over the last six years! The new fake feather is in the middle and the DreamWorks image on the right. As can be seen, the filament structure of an ostrich tail feather is very different to a normal flight feather and the DW original. The filaments stick out at right angles and each one is all fluffy. Dare I hack any more strands out of the new one?
