Wing au: so there’s this process called imping and it’s where birds are given prosthetic feathers. Imagine after Amity’s wings are clipped Luz goes “yo what if you get functional prosthetic feathers” but imping requires donor feathers so Luz and friends donate some of their feathers and Amity just dies from their kindness -nerd anon

Okay but thats so cute?? I love it??? Everyone donates some of their feathers so they can still somewhat fly but still make sure Amity is able to. They have to physically stop Luz before she plucks enough feathers to render near-unable to fly for the next few weeks. Amity gets those feathers slapped on and it looks a bit weird and wonky and its not the same flying shes used to but bold of you to assume she cares!! Shes boutta cry from all they doing for her and is just THRILLED to b able to try and fly again. she don’t care how weird her wings look they from her friends n fambly (found family bitch) and thats all that matters

After falling down a chimney, this tawny owl was left with badly damaged flight feathers, a small wound on the wing and covered from head to toe in soot! Following a lengthy process, across the course of a few days, the vet team managed to remove as much of the soot as possible. The owl is currently awaiting a feather imping procedure, to keep its time here at the centre to a minimum – ‘imping’ is a process whereby ‘donor’ feathers are implanted into the existing feather shafts, returning the power of flight without a lengthy wait for new feathers to grow. The donor feathers will fall out, naturally, during the bird’s next moult, leaving no trace that they were ever there. So I’m a falconer, and we imp feathers pretty regularly, but I’ve NEVER seen it in a wing fic EVER. I loved seeing seeing it way more than I should. Like, did you just make my irritating chore of wing care MAGICAL and SHIPPY??? Bless you for it!!

Ah hahaha! I am glad you, as someone who has done it, enjoyed it! I've never personally done it since my birds haven't damaged their flight feathers before and don't need to fly anyway, but I knew it was a thing and knew basically how it was done, and looked up a few guides and pictures to be sure I wasn't completely talking out of my ass when I wrote it. I was REALLY excited to write it, I know you see it as a chore but it's so cool to me. You can just!! Fix a wing!! You can just repair a feather!! You can super offend an entire bird of prey with this kind of indignity!! how dare u touch wingy

The feather imping is complete! After a long, very careful procedure, Maru successfully completed the imping surgery on our tawny owl. The owl, now, has a full set of flight feathers, once more. After just 24 hours, the bird has already moved into one of our outside aviaries, where it can test its new wings. This jackdaw arrived at the centre having been found unable to fly. Sadly, the primary feathers on its left wing appeared to have been clipped and, although these would be replenished on the next moult, the stress and potential taming that could occur over the time period needed for recovery could not be risked. Luckily, we are able to help the bird return to the air much more quickly by 'imping' the damaged wing. To do this, the feathers from a donor wing are glued into the existing feather shafts. Special care has to be taken to ensure exactly the same feathers are relocated to exactly the same place, but the result is a perfectly functional wing!
