Dean hides the flowers behind his back. It was a last minute gift idea, and he’s self-conscious about it now. He’s not great at this relationship stuff, but he knows enough that when you mess up, you should give your partner gifts.

Dean started with breakfast, cooking the pancakes extra-fluffy, just how Cas likes. Cas smiled when he ate them, that had been a good sign.

Later, Cas accepted the new hunting knife Dean handed to him. He even said, “Thank you,” and Dean was thrilled to know they were still talking.

Now, Cas looks up at him from his seat in the library. Then his gaze shifts just past him, and Dean curses, knowing some of the flowers must be visible.

“Dean?”

“Yeah?”

“Are those... for someone special?”

Well, it’s too late to throw them in the trash, Dean decides, and pulls them from behind his back. “Yeah, Cas.”

Cas is out of his chair in an instant, and across the room, scooping the flowers into his arms. He smells them, smiling, but as suddenly, he stills.

“Have I forgotten our anniversary?” Cas asks.

Dean blinks. “No?”

Cas frowns. “Is it the day we set as my birthday?”

“No. Cas, I don’t think you -”

Cas’s gaze snaps to Dean so suddenly it startles him. His eyes go wide and wet. “Are you breaking up with me?”

“What? No!” Dean starts forward. He places his hands on Cas’s elbows. Touch always works on Cas, and he releases some of the tension. He’s still watching Dean with too-wide eyes, but now they aren’t so devastated. “We’re fighting, remember? I’m trying to apologize.”

Cas stares at him a moment. He tilts his head. “We are?”

“Remember? I was a jerk last night.”

Cas narrows his eyes. He looks to the left, like he’s thinking hard.

“When I said,” Dean continues, sighing. He really doesn’t want to say it again. “When I said that we’d have the case solved in about two minutes with your angel mojo.”

Cas looks back to him. “That was fact, Dean.”

“Yeah, but... Wait, no.”

Cas gave up his angel grace to be with them, and since he’s fallen... well, if he hadn’t fallen, Dean and Cas might not be Dean and Cas. Sure, having Cas’s angel mojo would make things easier sometimes, but Cas is Cas. He’s an asset no matter the strength of the packaging.

“No.” Dean looks at Cas, at the forget-me-not’s weaved through the bouquet that pale compared to his eyes. “We don’t need your angel mojo. We just need you.” Dean shakes his head. That’s still not right. “I need you.”

Cas buries his nose in the flowers. When he eases back again, a smile tugs his lips. “I was never mad at you, Dean.”

“Yeah, well, maybe I was.”

Cas holds out the flowers. “Perhaps you should give these to yourself.” There’s a spark in his eye, and Dean knows he’s being teased.

So Dean laughs, the first all day. “Maybe we can share.”

“That’s a wonderful idea.”

Cas finds a vase in the kitchen, then arranges them in their bedroom, on the desk. Dean looks at them as he crawls into bed, but then he has eyes only for Cas.

I have a clear image in my head of me reading this in a house I have not lived in for four years. And this is published in 2018-2019. What. The. Hell. Anyway, I love it. Enjoyed everything. I love when people come up with great ideas for cases and this definitely had one.

Summary: 16 months ago, Cas became human.

12 months ago, Cas left the bunker and a broken-hearted Dean behind.

Now they must work a case together, where married couples are dying mysterious deaths and the only way to earn the neighbors' trust is by pretending to be married. Slowly, Dean finds that he loves being in a relationship with Cas, fake or not, and Cas finds his loneliness retreating, despite the harsh reality looming right around the corner. As Dean and Cas navigate this fake, but all too real, relationship, can they find the monster that is on a mysteriously motivated killing spree before it’s too late?

Sometimes Castiel can’t take it.

It’s been so long, so many years of him constantly trying, in his own clumsy way, to navigate his relationship with Dean. He’s known from the beginning that pushing too fast or too far will destroy everything that he’s tried so hard for—to the best of his knowledge, Dean has only ever been in relationships with women, and Castiel doesn’t want to risk scaring him away if he’s too blunt or too forward.

But then, if he goes the other way, if he undershoots his intentions…

There’s no way Dean could ever know that he’s actually interested, could ever know the way that Castiel has felt about his all this time.

And that’s the balance that he’s fighting so hard with, that he’s been fighting so hard with ever since he first laid a hand on Dean’s soul in Hell and saw him for the person he truly is.

Because he’s in love with Dean Winchester, his Righteous Man.

And it still feels like Dean has no idea.

Well, that’s not quite true. He’s sure Dean has an inkling of some kind, or his own well-buried feelings—no one looks at their friend the way Dean has looked at him when they’re totally uninterested. But in all the years they’ve been doing this dance around each other, all the sparks they’ve shared and the moments where Castiel has thought, this is it, it’s really happening…

Nothing has ever come of it.

And that’s what hurts like a knife in Castiel’s heart.

His thoughts wind round and round in his head, even as his hands move without thinking, dismantling and cleaning his gun over and over just the way Dean had taught him so many years ago. It’s getting late, but he knows that he won’t be able to sleep even if he lays his head down. He’s spent so many nights this same way, just… thinking.

The silver-yellow mix of moon and streetlight filters through the dusty motel window and falls gently across Dean’s sleeping figure in the next bed over. His expression is slack, relaxed, innocent, lips softly parted and one hand curled loosely against his chest. Castiel’s heart aches as he thinks back to the beginning of their friendship—how he would stand and watch Dean sleep, just as he’s doing now. A guardian angel, already beginning to fall.

But now Castiel is human, and he can’t simply watch Dean sleep all night, just like how he can’t heal the bruise on Dean’s cheekbone or the heavy fall he’d taken onto his shoulder today—yesterday? It’s all blurring together now, in these early hours.

Like humanity, his soul aches for something he can never have, something forever out of his grasp. It hurts, it hurts more than he ever could have imagined, watching over all of humanity from his sheltered position up in Heaven. But now… now he understands.

He would do anything for love. For Dean. But there’s one thing he cannot do—can never do.

He cannot tell Dean how he feels.

Because no matter how much he wants to be with Dean, and how much he feels like his unresolved emotions are eating him alive…

He has a family here. He has a purpose. He has something to fight for.

And pushing Dean when he’s still not ready could mean risking everything.

So he continues to sit on his bed in the dim lighting of their motel room, fingers working over his gun and gaze rarely leaving Dean’s face, until the weight of his exhaustion becomes too much to bear, his thoughts stop eating at him just for a little while, and he’s finally, finally able to succumb to the thoughtless embrace of sleep.
