Friend or Foe

Running, running, running. Run faster, you have to run faster, his legs screamed. His shoes crunching on the gravel and rubble as he hastily tried climbing over broken buildings blown from the sky. His breathing labored as he took a chance and looked back. She was charging at him, making his stomach sink. He thought.. he thought.. the two were finally getting somewhere but... No, as he thought back, he realized he just found her in a state of calm, and the knife in his pocket scared her. He snapped back to reality as he jumped forward, tumbling down. His form bolting onwards as crashing thumps for footsteps neared. She's gaining on him and he can't run as fast as he used to, stress and anxiety bogging down his powers like a disease. He just wanted to heal her, fix her, fix Garnet... His hand gripped his arm, dripping with crimson. That was his price to pay, he would lie to Pearl about this later, just saying he tumbled down...  Steven shook his head as he swerved off to the left, watching her large form barrel past as he snuck into an alleyway. He kept moving, he had to keep moving, even though his lungs burned from the putrid air, and his legs shook from running. Once he was sure that she had gone, he snuck back out onto the main road, to the crumbling stores. Scanning the shelves for food that wasn't damaged or rotten, stowing cans in his rucksack, tugging the straps so the metal wouldn't jingle and alert the nearby human tribes. He had seen what they do to people with food and water... who did not 'share'... He shivered, still remembering Peedee's body. He had to keep moving though, for his own sake and the gems, swerving about rubble once more, before running a hand through his hair as he kept running, snatching his canteen and chugging it dry. The temple was in sight, right there in his grasp. His vision blurs as he stumbled on the doorsteps, before twisting open the bunker door and collapsing down. Hearing the muffled voices of the gems fade out...

A New Leader in Town

    It all happened too fast to really register. First Garnet, or what once was Garnet, charged at Steven, the boy freezing up in fear. The next Garnet was stumbling back roaring in agony. Pearl had a shotgun in her hands and in Garnet's chest was a bullet wound. Pearl quickly commanded "Amethyst, Lapis, take Steven to the bunker. Get away from here. Peridot, you too." Her voice was cold as she starred down the beast that once was such a dear friend to her. The gem that she helped to learn how to walk. Garnet roared, it was a sound that resembled wild thunder and the gems and half-gem could feel it vibrating through their chests. "P, are you su-"      "GET OUT OF HERE ALL OF YOU!" Pearl barked out and lifted her gun once again at the corrupted gem in front of them. The burgundy gem was slowly getting back to its senses. Making an annoyed "tch" sound Lapis quickly grabbed Peridot and Steven, pulling them along as the four of the 5 crystal gems quickly disappeared behind some hill. Making an empty laugh, Pearl lifted up her gun. Her eyes which were hidden behind the visor turned slightly sorrowful. Garnet launched herself at Pearl before the slim gem could shoot again and threw her to the ground.     The clothing tore and the claws grazed her pale unreal flesh. Quickly lifting her shotgun with both arms, she blocked Garnet's huge mouth. Two powerful paws slammed on both sides of her, one of the claws piercing through her clothing and into her chest. Starring at the wild, corrupted eyes of Garnet, Pearl gritted her teeth. Everyone she loved, left her. Some more painfully than the others. Or maybe, this time it wouldn't be her, ending the life of a corrupted friend but the corrupted gem ontop of her who would destroy her or damage her gem for the poison to seep in. Still starring into those wild eyes the new leader, probably not for long now, of the crystal gems shed a tear. A sorrowful "I'm so sorry Garnet" leaving her mouth.

Outlook

Pearl took a breath as she exited the bunker for the fifth time in the night, and walked to the beachside. She stared out into the dead, pink, waters of the ocean, watched the reflection of herself in the waves. Pearl had been doing this for a few weeks now, she would go out and just....take it all in. It was still Incomprehensible to her, Bismuth, Garnet, Little Homeworld, life as she'd known it for those years.....erased.  She looked over to the shadow in the distance and grimaced behind her respirator. In the distance was the crystalized remains of the Cluster, the massive, half-formed amalgam. When it all happened, it was enough to wake the Cluster, It emerged in terror, and never moved again. Pearl hated seeing the beast in the distance, nothing but an old stone ruin of a gem now, not even a hivemind anymore, nothing at all. She turned around and saw the remains of the temple, even now it took her breath away. Even in recent years, it was a beauty, it's old, stones, shining like stars on the beachside. Now, most of it had been completely decayed, almost nothing but a corroded, charred wreck of stone. Her thoughts soon drifted to Steven, the boy she'd give it all for. She had known how scared and concerned he was for a while now, but he wouldn't talk to her about most of it since....Garnet. She breathed in and started to walk back to the bunker doors, trying started to think of any positive outcome, and drew into nothing. Her face hardened as she took off her respirator, and glanced at the same dreary tunnels and sighed.  "Here we are in the Future."

Last one Standing pt1

      The air was heavy with dust, heat radiating off the ground like it was a heater. It was another lonely day in the wasteland that once was a place full of green. Pearl was on another lone mission, another "expedition" in search for food and wiping away some nearby "rodents". 

     She laid in the shadow, in a hole that was under two huge rock slabs. Around them was a poisonous river flowing almost harmlessly. The humans were setting up a camp, it was still afternoon but it was safer than building it at the come of sundown.

     The camp was about....five men and two women. While she waited, the pale gem began to think. How long has it been since this began? She couldn't remember. The days merged together as Pearl's most important goal every day became finding food and water for Steven, find Materials for a space ship, maybe find any sign of Connie and Greg. But her most important goal was to, defend. Her. Friends.

     She already lost Bismuth and....Garnet. Garnet was now a monster. Another crystal gem leader to go down. Now Pearl waited for her turn to meet an end in any way. Thinking of Garnet and Rose, Pearl realized something.

She was the last original Crystal gem

Peridot’s Logs 1

    Earth date 7/7/2020 0600 hours, I am getting used to the weird system the Steven insists we use to “effectively communicate time” It has been three days since Lapis went missing, I would normally call her a lost cause by now, the gemtoxin should have brought the sickness… or worse. But Well I just couldn’t bring myself to write her off.

     Earth date 7/7/2020 0900 hours, I am currently following a trail leading from the bunker out into the desert, gravity connectors hurt, touch stubs are tingly, I want to help Lapis, but this is insane, the sun is bright I must make a note of it. A note the Steven gave me said I should say what I have brought with me. I have the morp I have been working on, my protective body cloth, some of what the tall one calls “bug spray” and of all things a food shaped satchel that the Steven demanded I bring with. I see a glinting in the distance, It could be her.

    Earth Date 7/7/2020 1200 hours, I found her. Say hi Lapis. BZZZT “Hi Lapis” BZZZT, NO I MEANT SAY HI TO THE BOX, BZZZT “Why would I say hi to the box” BZZZT UGH well she is being insufferable BZZZT “No your insufferable” BZZZT LAPIS IM TALKING TO THE BOX, anyways, now that Lapis and I are at a safe distance it is time to test the Morp, Time to give the humans a taste of their own gemtoxin…

     Earth Date 7/7/2020 1815 Hours, returned to base, Lapis is hurt, I have no memory of why Did I do it? Did a human… did a gem? Either way, we have Lapis back, Brought the Steven some food, I don’t know why it likes this stuff back on the way, He fixed Lapis’ cracked Gem, mine was fine though, I just wish I could remember… Anyways… We are safe, in the bunker, protected… Peridot Out.

Friend or Foe Pt 2

Pearl and Amethyst anxiously waited to hear some kind of news about Steven. One minute everyone was planning some kind of plan for the next time they went out, the next they see him stumbling into the bunker and collapsing right in front of them. Seeing as to where he was coming from, Pearl was horrified to see he was actually outside instead of the bunker where it was safe. Pearl and Amethyst gave anxious looks to each other as the minutes ticked by. About 10 minutes later, the door to where Steven was taken through opened and out stepped Peridot and Lapis. Immediately Pearl ran in front of them, anxious to hear the news. "How is he?!" The two gems looked at each other as Peridot stepped forward. "We believe that he fainted from exhaustion according to my readings. We couldn't find any source of the toxins getting into his system." "So in other words, he'll be ok when he gets enough rest," Lapis states. Both Pearl and Amethyst sighed in relief before Pearl thought of something else and glared at the remainder of the Crystal Gems. "Who let him out?" The others looked at Pearl confused. "What?" Amethyst asks. "Who was keeping an eye on him?! I thought we agreed we wouldn't let him out of the bunker out of any circumstances!" The silence came back for a few moments before Amethyst looked back at Pearl. "Garnet said she was taking him out. Even made sure he was equipped. I didn't question it because assuming she took him with her, he would be fine. She does have future vision." "Then why did he come back in that state and just where is Garnet, Amethyst?!" Pearl squawked out in frustration and panic. A sudden tension went through the group as the question left Pearl's mouth. Garnet and Steven left the bunker together, but only Steven returned. The tension thickened the more everyone thought about it. Steven returned....but Garnet did not. The gems had a horrible feeling of what could've possibly happened.

Last one Standing pt 2

      By sundown, Pearl had snapped out of her meddling and looked at the camp with a pair of binoculars. The men were sitting around the campfire talking and seemingly laughing over something. The women were probably in one of the tents.       Settling up her rifle, Pearl waited again. Once the men had their attention on a story that one of them told, she shot. 

Once.

Twice.

      There was panic and the three men scrambled for their weapons but the pale gem got another two easily. The fifth one quickly ran into the tent and moments later he ran out with the women. Another shot and the last one was down.

     She let the women run, they didn’t look like a threat. Pearl waited. It was quiet.

      Then she stood up and hauled her equipment onto her back, easily jumping across the river with her enhanced strength. She walked to the camp and looked at the dead men, killed as swiftly as possible with bullets.

       The raider camp didn’t have a lot of weapons surprisingly. Maybe they started raiding not too long ago... In a part of her mind, she pitied the men that she just shot but they were raiders that came too close to the crystal gem bunker for Pearl’s liking. A small thought ran through Pearl’s head. This was technically also raiding. But, she needed to do this. She needed to protect her family, she needed to keep Steven alive even if it meant stealing food from other humans.

      She packed the things she needed, food, water, medical supplies which were mostly for herself, some weapons, and other stuff that might be useful. She also found their half steel, half metal cart that she put the stuff into. Looking around, the sniper didn’t see anything else of interest and started walking home. Rose was gone for already over 16 years, Bismuth pleaded Pearl to shatter her and got her wish and Garnet was probably long gone in the mind of the corrupted creature.

She was the last original Crystal Gem, She was,

The Last One Standing.
