How to Lead Family Devotions (Without Feeling Awkward)
A simple guide for dads to lead family devotions without stress. Learn how to build faith, connect with your kids, and start today.
The word compassion consists of two components: “com” plus “passion.” Acts 1:3 defines the root word “passion” as suffering. The prefix “com” means with. Therefore, the compound word, com-passion means to suffer with someone. God expects every true child of God to demonstrate compassion, but even more impressive is the thought that the Lord Jesus Christ manifested compassion during His earthly ministry. What an amazing truth—the Lord of glory willingly humbles Himself to suffer with others. One might assume this only became possible because Christ took upon Himself the likeness of sinful flesh (Romans 8:3). Yet, the Bible attributes compassion to God prior to the first coming of Christ.
Book Review: Kingdom Family Devotional by Tony Evans
Today, I am reviewing the book, “Kingdom Family Devotional: 52 weeks of growing together” by Tony and Jonathan Evans. It is a medium sized hardbound book published by Focus on the Family and Tyndale House Publishers. The insert claims that it contains 260 easy to lead family devotions, and as a reader, I find that it is a book that encourages one to start making family devotions as a habit for their family.
Now growing up, I was very aware of how important family devotions were and my family alternated with seasons of having a set time to seasons where it became really tough and discouraging. I think it is great to start a review based on a personal experience - family devotions isn’t easy and it is a spiritual discipline.
Now this book that the two authors write help in more ways than one - and that is one of the reason why I find this book helpful and encouraging as a reader. First, it is organized into themes that help families stay on one theme per week, and for those who would like to try it out - the book contains many opportunities to delve deeper into spiritual themes and explain them to young children, or meditate in as a married couple. The last devotion after every theme/week allows for activities that can be used to apply certain lessons or see practical applications to spiritual truths. The daily readings are short, so for families who would like to dip their feet into this discipline, this is definitely a good start and does not feel overwhelming at all. For those families who have already instilled a set family devotional time, this book can still work because it contains so much and can easily be elaborated on and adjusted depending on your family needs.
My review - Tony and Jonathan Evans have managed to make family devotions a fun and great discipline for a Christian family to have. The book and the encouragement to do family devotions remind me of Deuteronomy 11:18-21 - Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the LORD swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.
Soli deo gloria!
I received a complimentary copy from Tyndale House Publishers and Focus on the Family, in exchange for a review. I was not asked to write a positive review in exchange for a copy, but choose to write a review that is constructive, honest and helpful to other consumers.
