From ceiling fan, to stand-fan, to exhaust fan, why all of them have 3 blades?

We can’t say that 3-blade fan is actually a standard, but a carefully designed product for the country, keeping in mind the tradeoff between energy requirement and cooling requirement.

In countries, like America and Japan etc, where fans are used only along with AC to maintain the air circulation in room. In India, fans are a primary source of cooling.

But just to clear the fact, fan doesn’t reduce room temperature, or air humidity, it just compresses the air, making it warmer than the body temperature, which causes evaporation of sweat & these vapours carry heat from body to surround & thus we feel chilling effect.

But why 3 blades only?

So the science is, more the number of blades, heavier the fan will be, so slower the RPM, and would need more powerful motor to rotate the fan, thus will increase the energy consumption.

But, increasing the blades, increase the airflow as well, but would increase the air drag(opposing force).

But then, why not go for 1-2 blade only?

1 blade is completely out of scope, as the blades need to balance the fan weight, and one blade fails miserable in this task.

2 blades? Good enough, but will have less air flow.

So, experimentations have proved that 3 blades are best suited for Indian households, with just the required amount of airflow, and energy consumption.

Americas and other such countries, which requires more air circulation in a closed room, prefers 4 blade fans, as the airflow is more, also as they have electric frequency of 60Hz(compared to 50Hz in India), it gets feasible to support a little heavier fan.

Quick fact: Fans have a humped airflow, higher in the middle of blade, and lower around the ends, so sitting just below the fan may not do good to you. Let your enemy sit. :-P 

This humped airflow causes the noise that comes through fan, so the fan companies come up with tapered, spiralled or twisted blades to smoothen the airflow, thus reducing the noise.
