Usually I find that there is two sides to the predator fandom, and the devision between the two is such a massive contrast that they may aswell be different fandoms. And they tolotate eachother at most, lemme explain.

Like on one side you have enjoyers ranging from just really enjoying some of the films to being deep into the lore, books and comics. However this side just focuses on what is already established and they don't delve any deeper than that really.

A lot of this side of the fandom (from what I've observed and correct me if im wrong), tends to be streight cis men who like the "testosterone fulled action," of the franchise. Usually, they're also the type to claim that the yautja have a patriarchal society, and theyre usually the ones that make the bad gooner art of the females, but never dare to draw them without their helmets (cowards).

And then you have the girlie pop side, that is obsessed to the point of engaging in fanfiction, x reader/oc stuff, yautja OCs etc. The fan content here tends to be much more engaging and fun, and usually we make yautja society more matriarchal (as it should be) and the gooner art we do make tends to be tasteful and actual monster fucker material. Need i say any more about this side?

Whoever is the more true fandom is up for debate, as for who likes the franchise more? Also up for debate. However the start constant between these two sides is hilariously insane to the point that you can't put a scale on it.

People would start doing this so freaking fast it is unreal. Which is one of the reasons censorship never actually pans out as intended.

People who want to censor assume everyone basically agrees with them as to what constitutes a violation. They assume it's "obvious" when in fact in a MAJORITY of cases it probably isn't.

They also assume most of the time people will be reporting a violation in good faith, when there's absolutely no reason to assume THAT either! Bad faith actors are COMMON in fandoms.

I know fans would use the "Racist Content" button to try to punish other fans for shipping POC, particularly if they were being tribalistic about their ship. Bad faith claims would be rampant, and there's no way for AO3 to handle that kind of complaint load or set up a total fair/transparent/universally agreed upon system for determining if a claim is made in bad faith (let alone systems for determining if the content actually IS racist or not)

It's so unbearably naive on so many levels to think content bans won't immediately be misused for petty reasons and applied in utterly inconsistent ways because art is so fucking subjective.

sorry I just needed to rant here. it PAINS me to see debates on who the best robin is, and everyone is just downvoting dick when he literally CREATED the standard. he was robin and robin was him. the ones that came after him were great in their own ways, but it's telling that they define and evaluate themselves by how well they either emulate or differ from dick. it esp hurts when the successors' best traits tend to reveal themselves when dick is nerfed in those very same traits (not always but often enough that it's just straight up disservice to both dick and the other robins' characterizations).

you can have your personal fave of the robins, sure. but to say that dick isn't the best... really????

maybe have a debate for certain skills or personality traits, but overall, dick grayson wins

Yup, Dick created the standard and built the legacy. He 👏🏻 did 👏🏻 that 👏🏻.

These debates are annoying because 1. what criteria are they judging to prove that X is the best 2. people are biased.

Most of the people who downvote Dick haven't even read older comics when Dick was Robin lolol what are they even comparing and contrasting.

Plus, the content of comics has changed with the times. Shit that happened in the 40s-80s is different from the stuff we see today. How characters are portrayed today is different from how they were portrayed back then, especially in tone. There really is no fair way to judge such a thing when everything is so influenced or impacted by time period differences as well as creative differences.

Besides, the best Robin is clearly Jarro ⭐️.

I apologize if this is rude bcz everyone is entlitled to their opinions and feelings but when I see msgs like the last one I just have to shake my head a little bit. I mean Caroline sent Stefan on the roadtrip, that is how much she trusts him. Only to find said ex in his house, in a towel the next morning. And all she said was 'Explain!' Isnt that reaction expected? And she believed what he told her, how is that being insecure? Also how awesome is this trend continuing from last season,

whenever the haters and the panicky fandom and part of the medialbr misinterprets SC scenes, usually Stefan’s words the show comes and clearsit up next episode! Remember how so many people were like ‘Stefan invitedValerie to LIVE with him, what is he doing?’ When literally he said stay theNIGHT. I was so happy in the webclip when he actually said ‘stayed, past tense,one night’.

You’re right that Caroline has every reason to beside-eyeing the situation. (Really Valerie, you’re obvious as a five year old. InterruptingStefan & Caroline wrapped in a towel?) Caroline asked a simple question,Stefan was dodgy in answering. Whether Caroline was insecure at that point is amatter of perception I suppose. Personally, I think Caroline’s reaction wasnormal & in character. That’s all that matters to me tbh. Besides, I’vejust been judging Valerie actions in that moment. (Isn’t it just common senseto not walk around someone else’s house in a towel? Especially when they haveother people over? Yeah, I see what you did there, Valerie.)  

You make a very good point about fans misinterpretingscenes though. The fact that there was (1) outrage that Valerie was “livingwith” Stefan and (2) a debate about it despite Stefan stating “for the night”demonstrates everything that is exhausting about internet fandom. Fans are prone to believe other people’s interpretations of the show rather than what was actually shown on screen.  

Actually, this phenomenon extends beyond fandom. Itoccurs within the media as well. Instead of paying attention to the primarysource (in this case TVD) people create “controversies” derived from secondarysources on the subject matter (in this case tumblr & twitter). So I think that this is just an exasperatingpart of human nature.

And yeah, I’m glad that Stefan emphasized that Valeriewas staying the night. It’s as if thewriters know what certain moments/scenes/dialogue will get fans riled up so they just throw in moments to quell the debates & the outrage. lol

Dean/crowley/tripelts would be huge if it where huge if it were canon, it isnt. If it even was sexual alone is not even canon let alone dean/crowley. Im all for meta but some people (not you) are treating it like all of those things are explilict text when its just one way of reading it.

No, it's not what I would call explicitly canon, given it's nature and the fact it is so open to interpretation.  There's definitely a lot of squabbling around it, which shows people have taken very different things from it (even some pro-bi!Dean or pro canon Destiel people aren't entirely convinced).  I think a very strong argument can be made for it being implicitly canon though.  I know they very much are not the same thing, but getting implicit is still a very good sign (I hope, and I know I'm always way optimistic about these things) for better things to come.  Doesn't mean that they will, unfortunately, but right now, given the amount of subtext they crammed into that episode, I'm pretty happy with the chances of that being increased at some point in the future.

Having that, combined with Cas' mourning/grief, and the very parallel ways their stories were structured is making me do happy dances all over the place though, gotta say.  It might still be subtext, but it's strongsubtext.

Starting debates in Tolkien fandom- good idea or bad idea?

I would love to say it’s a good idea, Anon. 

But. 

It depends a lot on which side of the debate you’re on, and how popular the side you’re with/against is in the fandom. 

Tolkien left a large body of work, and lots of conflicting and unfinished information about it. Picking and choosing what you want from his early writings is, for lack of a better expression, “American as apple pie”. 

Only two things are set in stone. Those two things are the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit. The Silmarillion, the Laws and Customs of the Eldar, the History of Middle Earth- all of these works have been edited or rearranged or sometimes left unfinished. 

When two people in the fandom can’t agree on something, sometimes it ends amicably. 

Sometimes it doesn’t. 

Sometimes it comes down to reading comprehension and context. My most ready example is how I read “Of Maeglin” compared to how others read it.

Convincing another person that their comprehension of the text is incorrect is about as impossible as turning lead into gold, and it leaves a lot of hurt feelings. I get accused on a semi-regular basis of being an abuse supporter/apologist because of how I read that chapter of the Silmarillion, and my writings involving Eol. 

So, If tl;dr: start a debate at your own risk. Maybe you’ll hit a good group of people who just want to talk about their favorite things. Maybe you’ll hit a bunch of assholes. You don’t really know until you try.
