I live in a trashcan when it comes to BL, and I'm perfectly happy living in my trashcan and encouraging everyone else to find the trashcan of their dreams.
However, going to be honest, a BL about BL actors falling in love honestly makes me a little nervous. The plot itself doesn't bother me - YongJie is my favorite character in History4 so I'm in no position to judge anyone for anything.
But given issues in BL about fanservice and pushing actors to act like their dating.......ugh.
Like obviously, we should all be able to enjoy whatever fiction brings up joy, and if this fits into my trashcan, I will gobble it down and let it bring me joy. But....I just worry........
I do not deny that the idea of actors falling in love within a show does make me a little bit... apprehensive for how it will be handled and how it can be handled.
But if it's wild and over the top enough, I can probably handle it.
Call It What You Want did something similar and handled it surprising well but that was also a director and an actor and was trying to be realistic about the real world consequences which I don't think War of Y is gonna try so... very different.
Also calls back to Lovely Writer with the discussion of the shipping versus the real life relationships and the idea of wanting that lie to be real versus wanting to lead their real lives...
So this isn't the first but it is one of the first to be this specific unless we look to the Philippines for the maybe-to-exist sequel to Boys' Lockdown that's about the actors falling in love but, honestly, I had a lot of qualms about that too.
There have been others, I'm sure, but they're not super common and I'm kind of glad about that.
This is one where the show is not what I'm worried about, it's the fan reaction. And having seen some fans lately... I do worry. I get it. I've seen a few too many people using the word crush to discuss friendships between actors and it does make me DEEPLY uncomfortable.
But that's not the fault of the people making the show and it is an interesting thing to see and explore and I like the idea. I just worry about the fans taking it as Fan Service rather than Fiction.
