Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected? More. I was pretty productive this year, more than I thought I would be. I wrote a few shorter fics, which helps, and none of my fics had over 30k, but still, I'm proud of myself for the output I managed this year.
What’s your own favorite story of the year? Hm, probably my FTH story for @discordantwords Waiting for Godot, it took me a bit to get it right, but I think I pulled off some good stuff in there, and addressed some stuff about Sherlock specifically that I always wanted to tackle.
Did you take any writing risks this year? I wrote a story where Sherlock and John both die in every chapter . I'm still stunned that you all seem to have enjoyed it a lot.
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the new year? I want to write the next (and possibly last) instalment of the Nothing Gold series, and I think I'll probably do Fandom Trumps Hate again. Other than that, I want to have fun and go where the muse takes me.
Most popular story of the year? I think it's pretty much a tie between The Baker Street Jumper War and Seven Lessons for a Healthy Relationship with Sherlock Holmes, which shows me we all want some simple queer joy occasionally.
Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Look, the thing is, I get it. You write an ongoing series, engagement is going to dwindle. I personally think my sister stories Fire and Ice are among the best things I've ever done, but if they're fic 6 and 7 in an ongoing series, you lose people. It's just the way it is.
Most fun story to write: Oh, the Baker Street Jumper War for sure. It was such fun coming up with all the jumpers, for one, and the joy of basically drafting that fic with the Fic Club was *chef's kiss*
Most unintentionally telling story: If anyone didn't know I'm a massive history nerd, they'll know after Stars May Collide. And if anyone doesn't know that I have a massive hard-on for getting inside of Sherlock's head and making him fix some behavioural issues he has, then they know after Waiting for Godot.
Biggest disappointment: None, honestly. It was a good year in fandom, even if it was a shitty year on the global stage. I think the best thing we can do is to keep each other company, hold each others' hands, and keep telling each other stories as we brace for impact from 2026.
Biggest surprise: That you all read and enjoyed a fic where Sherlock and John die in every chapter ;-)
No, seriously, I'm grateful for every reader, every kudo, reblog, every heated discussion in comment sections when I'm being obnoxiously overly analytical, every fic club session, ever fic I read, every Tumblr post, every one of you.
I was especially grateful to meet all the wonderful people of the Fic Writers' Retreat in August. @meetinginsamarra @pagimag @shirleycarlton @beccibarnes @pommedepersephone @frodosweetstuff @seekers-who-are-lovers you are all delightful, inspiring, and just wonderful human beings. I hope we get to do this again this year.
