I talk about Mastodon every so often, so I tend to want a quick "and here's how to join" guide I can link to. Here it is! (updated June 2025)

First: the fandom side of Mastodon is great. There aren't a lot of us, but it's cozy and well-moderated. We have nice conversations and fun events. I'm currently running a daily mini prompt game and a character tournament, we've had ship bingo games go around, and danmei read- and watch-alongs pop up every so often (there are a TGCF readalong and a Winter Begonia watch-along ongoing). It's a bit like a cross between Tumblr and a Discord server.

Also: YOU CAN POST PORN. Full-on cocks in holes and everything! Or you can easily avoid it, because marking it as NSFW is required, and the filtering options are excellent.

Anyway. How to join:

The server I recommend is blorbo.social. It's an 18+ multifandom server, and it allows personal posts as well. The mods are fandom people who care about fandom creators (attributing works, preventing harassment, etc.) There is a 3,000 character limit per post (about 750 words, a bit longer than this post).

If that sounds good, here is a walk-through to minimize confusion. Of course, please do what you want, but I find that a lot of people want to be told what to do here!

Don't look at the app store yet.

Sign up on the website (blorbo.social/auth/sign_up) in your browser. No need to write an essay, just mention fandom

Wait for your approval email

NOW check the app store. If/when you want an app, search for "Ice Cubes" (on iOS) or "Moshidon" (on Android) (not "Mastodon")

When the app asks, your "server" or "instance" is "blorbo.social"

(You can also just use the website - I'm adding app instructions because everyone seems to want them!)

Add something to your profile to show that you're a real person, just like on Tumblr: you can add a profile picture and bio, and you can make your first post! You can introduce yourself and list tags for your favorite fandoms (it can be as simple as "hiiiii I like #TGCF!"). Pinning that post is also good.

Follow a bunch of people and hashtags, since there's no algorithm. You can search for "xieliansbignaturals", if you'd like to follow me!

From there, you'll figure it out! I'm very happy to answer questions, but I don't want to load this post with so much information that it's overwhelming.

If you're looking for somewhere else to go now that Tumblr is selling our data to AI, I have a recommendation!

I'm a big fan of blorbo.social, a small Mastodon server for fandom (as you might have guessed from the name). We love our blorbos there. There aren't a lot of us, but there are enough to have nice discussions and silly threads. If you're in danmei or OFMD fandom, you'll find friends easily, and if not, your friends will just have different fandoms from you.

I run a daily fandom prompt game over there - drabbles! doodles! any other creative medium! (We've had podfic and cosplay!) I've also run fandom tournaments like "Most Pathetic Character", "Biggest Simp", "Femdommiest Mommy", and there have been various OFMD-centric tournaments I wasn't paying as much attention to (sorry OFMD fans). You can post about your personal life, your blorbo thirst, your silly headcanons, your serious fanfiction...

NSFW is allowed, but you have to mark it, so it's easy to avoid. The mods are doing this out of love for fandom, so they won't be selling your data. And there are specific rules against various forms of bigotry and harassment, as well as proactive moderation, so you won't have to worry about TERFs or fan-police/antis.

I made a post a few days ago on blorbo.social, asking people: what keeps you on the site?

I thought the answers might be interesting to people here. I feel like they fell into four categories:

Software features! (customization of timeline, good filters, ability to edit posts, content warning cuts, the ability to make your posts private)

Lack of user-hostile features! (like ads, an algorithm that wants you to be upset so you engage more, data collection, etc. - the place is successfully run by donations, so there’s no need to squeeze money from the users)

The mods are trustworthy! (the moderation is done by humans who you can talk to, and blorbo.social explicitly bans fancops/antis and encourages kinky queer porn)

It’s quieter and smaller there, and the people are chill! (we focus on joyful sharing and discussions instead of drama, we have meaningful and supportive interactions with each other, and we leave nice comments on unpolished art and personal posts)

I really like the conversations I have on Mastodon, and the way our little fandom community supports each other. 🥺 When I post about things I'm struggling with or little happy things in my life, I always get such a kind handful of replies. And we have such fun, silly conversations about Hualian, too!

I feel like I'm really bad at using Tumblr's format to have conversations... Mastodon is really good for them, though. I feel like the way it's set up and moderated actively encourages me to talk with people.
