Fanart from the lovely Renard, inspired by the latest chapter of Catalysis! *A*;; I am in such awe of this...
So I do think that Ling wants to be emperor, and wants to do right by his people, but I also think it’s a fate that was foisted upon him from a very young age, and he never had much choice in the matter. He probably had a very strained childhood.
(or maybe I just wanted to draw adorable baby Ling let’s be honest)
Also talkies weren’t really a thing until the 1920s, but this is a world in which a 200 year old artificially-created demon can ride shotgun in the body of a teenage boy, so I’m not too concerned with accuracy. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Catalysis lives! A new chapter, folks, enjoy!
“No really, do you they always make dress like a ghost shrouded in grandma’s floral curtains?”
“Well, they don’t take my royal decrees very serious when I show up to court in sweatpants. Why, exactly, are you half-naked and covered in blood?”
greed revival au: part 2 - aka “will people please stop sticking blades in my face that’d be super thanks”
Headcanon that probably doesn't work within the existing timeline but I like the idea of anyway:
The boys operate on different sleep schedules, Greed a night owl, Ling an early bird. And since they share Ling's body, their circadian rhythm is on his schedule, making for a very groggy, very cranky Greed. How a soul can feel exhaustion independent of his physical body they never really figure out, nor do they care to. An alchemist might put more credence in the science of artificially bonded souls, but for the layman it's just blood magic, whatever goes, goes.
Greed fights it for a while, trying to force his body to sleep in (his body, HIS), then later, making himself rise earlier, bleary and incoherent while his bright-eyed, how-is-he-so-alert-without-caffiene host fusses impatiently -- neither to any real effect. It's months before he concedes, in attempt and autonomous control, and the mornings / early afternoons become almost wholly Ling's.
He's free to rise at dawn; bathe and relieve himself without feeling self conscious and exposed; eat breakfast without complaints of his choice of eggs or number ("eat the whole coop why don't we?" "well, we're a growing boy."); catch up on books and news about Central and gossip about home; spar and meditate and just exist in the solitary -- all for a few hours while Greed dozes.
The idealistic Emperor Yao is making real strides in bringing peace to the warring clans, but for some, it's not fast enough, not good enough. The country will tear itself apart while this child sits unjustly upon the throne, a position granted not by experience and worth, but because of a fabled relic. A fairy tale should not warrant such power. How can he ever really be trusted to make real change? Desperate to protect their people, the Chang Clan lays siege to the palace, in a bid to usurp the crown.
Now Mei is caught between loyalty to her Clan, and her support of Ling, who she is growing to respect as an Emperor, and care about as a brother.
Does this fanfic exist? This fanfic should exist. Please give me all that sweet Xingese political strife, that's gooood stuff.
(sorry I keep posting this, trying to get around the arbitrary flagging system, this is the last time I’ll try it, I swear! )
Soppy dumb revival AU, in which some of Greedling’s blood spilled during the battle, or remnants of his Philosopher’s Stone survived in Father’s hideout, or some other macguffin, but something of Greed remains, and Somehow He Gets Better™. Regenerated in his old body. Mostly human. Sans-clothing. (Mustang was thrilled about that one) Though heavily questioned and studied, he actually gets a surprising amount of praise and gratitude for his part in the battle, and around Central Command his tattoo is a flag for his heroism instead of a mark of something inhuman and evil.
Eventually he makes his way to Xing with the Elric brothers, and after weeks of desert travel, has little patience for pleasantries, or protocol, or that it’s the middle of the night and the Emperor is indisposed for the evening. Give the brat a crown, and suddenly he’s too good for unsolicited late night visitors? Tough. So Greed pulls a Ling Yao special, sneaks off on his own, and climbs in through the window. Cue a teary reunion, and Ling's snot all over his shirt. He doesn’t mind so much.
(If I was a more talented, more patient artist, there would be way more of a scuffle on the first page, considerably more gawking from Ling, better dialogue placement and better dialogue. Consider this an abridged version of this AU scenario!)
