We need to talk about Paolo Montes.

So, @iskindiriya post about Rick’s terrible Egyptian representation through Zia (you can read it here) was a painful reminder to me about how lazy (and borderline offensive) the writing of Paolo in Trials of Apollo was, and since I didn’t want to derail her post, I decided to write my own on everything that’s wrong in Rick’s writing on a Brazilian character.

Let’s start with the name. I’ve never, in my 23 years of living in this Earth and in this country, met someone named Paolo. It’s extremely rare and unusual, to the point that the Brazilian Portuguese translation of the books came with the name altered to Paulo, which is way more common and it makes much more sense. It might seem something stupid to complain about a name, but I want to remind you guys that Paolo is the only Brazilian character in the books. He’s literally the only representation we have, and Rick couldn’t even take ten seconds of his day to search for male Brazilian names online. It’s frustrating to say the least.

Now the thing that bothers the most about Paolo, something that sounds really offensive to me, it’s the fact that he doesn’t speak English. That guy spends at least the whole summer on Camp, surrounded by English speaking people, and yet he speaks nothing of the language? There is the assumption that Paolo understands English, he only chooses not to speak it, but even that doesn’t make any sense. Rick chose to write his only Brazilian character having a self imposed language barrier with the rest of the characters just because? He spends his whole summer surrounded by people who don’t understand his first language, so he just chooses not to communicate with anyone? That really Otherizes him in relation to the rest, this loud man who screams around a language the others don’t understand. That’s really offensive, especially because we’re talking about a latino man and that fits him in a lot of terrible stereotypes.

Now you guys must have been wondering why am I so invested in such an unimportant character, but that’s because he’s literally the only representation I have in a world that means so much to me. I started reading Rick Riordan’s books when I was 12, I had to wait until my adult life to see someone from my country in the books and... that was what I got. It’s really disappointing, even more because it’s such a minor character that it should be hard to mess up this bad, but he did it. He really, really did.

ok great percy jackson show that’s awesome. hey can we talk about how, while rick riordan is definitely not as bad as jkr, he’s still not that great? people treat him like a god when his diverse characters are very shoddily researched
