It is impossible for me to imagine Declan actually being homophobic. And it is impossible for me to imagine Ronan NOT vehemently believing Declan is homophobic until he comes out to him.
Y'know what rarepair I was always really into? Jiang and Declan. Jiang being the razors edge that Declan can't resist, mostly because Jiang is his own kind of perfection. Straight As, a university lined up, a future waiting for him, and yet Normal Boring Armored Declan's knees are scuffed and bruised from hotel room carpet and the kind of sacrament the Lynch family priest would never approve of.
An indulgence he can't allow but does because somewhere along the way, they stumbled into each other and Jiang was the right balance of unknown variables and visible math to let Declan feel like he could stop running, for five minutes. Stop hiding for a little longer. Relax, maybe. Not yet. Not now. But at some point.
two quintessential features of the trc fandom: dream pack fans stubbornly inventing character out of thin air for the undescribed pack members, and the obsessive propensity to ship declan with everyone possible. here they meet. i mean, i can't blame anyone, really--who* wouldnt want to break Declan's pretty featureless facade, and why not take advantage of kavinsky's anonymous dogs to invent a pack member tailor made to do so?
i comprehend the appeal, anyway. did you ever find any comrades for your rarepair, fair anon?
(*me. i dont care about declan, except as a piece of the inimitably complex/twisted Lynch Family Experience, in which case his role is very interesting. but generally i'm content to leave him be.)
Sometimes I still get caught up in the small split between the people who assumed Kavinsky was a foil for Ronan, and those who observed that Kavinsky was a foil for Adam. Foundational means aside, they hold a mirror up to each other and then shatter it into a shower of glittering, lethal shards. And I think the most visible scene in which this proves itself to be true is the one where Adam has Ronan dream up all of that evidence. A perfect airtight frame job, a knife covered in poison crafted from wonder and hung like a sword.
I don't have any recommendations, it's been a long time since I read TRC fics, but I always preferred the ones that leant attention to Adam's capacity for the brutal. This boy made of earth, bits of him gone hard and jagged from the crucible of his upbringing. Malleable still in that way tectonic plates are, in that way reclaimed clay can be once you grind it into its parts and add time, and water, and attention. Ronan is the dreamer, but /Adam/ wears the card of potential.
Magician.
(Re: foils, consider also Ronan's dream with the two of them.)
Adam is a cunning bitch through and through. I would agree that he ought not be underestimated. He's not broken in the way that a broken doll is broken (collapsed, crushed, snipped strings); rather, like broken pottery, he has sharp shards for edges. Card of the Magician indeed.
ur url is truly fantastic and as a fellow member of the ronan has adhd gang, is support u
thank u it was such a clear reading to me when I read trc and imo ADHD rep is rly important
