Headcanons for Tsukishima, Yamaguchi and Nishinoya with a female s/o from Hispanic heritage. They are typically relaxed but can get pretty hyper. They love to cook native food and always blast Spanish music around them and goof off. Context: They were a transfer student to Karasuno. They didn't know much Japanese, and struggle fitting in. When they join the girl's volleyball team, they turn out to be a huge asset. How would they deal with their s/o feeling discriminated against or picked on?
I hope you don’t mind this being in second person! And sorry too for not including everything into the hcs, I hope you enjoy either way. 🤍
Tsukishima showed little interest in you when you first transferred to Karasuno. He never made an effort to talk to you, or to learn more about your heritage, but somehow always found himself eavesdropping on the conversations you had with others around him
It wasn’t until he noticed how much you were having trouble with communicating and making friends that he finally tried interacting with you. His English/Spanish wasn’t very strong, but you appreciated his attempt to talk to you in your mother tongue
Overtime, you were adopted by other people in his friend group, so the time you spent together grew as time went on
He always seemed a bit annoyed whenever you’d play your music, and even more so when you started to dance along with it. But later that day he would always go home and add it to his playlist, falling asleep to it while absentmindedly thinking about you
He was actually the one that helped you fill out your application to join the volleyball team, translating characters and abbreviations that you didn’t understand on the form
Kei knew that the other students could be a little annoying when it came to transfer students, but he didn’t expect them to outright discriminate against you to your face. It irritated him when they took advantage of the fact that you couldn’t understand what they were saying
He’d have a hard time just watching it happen, knowing how hard you work to just be “normal”
Eventually he’d make snide comments to them that went over your head, and would lead you away from them to sit with him and his friends instead
“Wait, what did you say to them, Tsukishima?”
“Nothing, I told them that you were busy with something.”
“Just be quiet and come on.”
When the opportunity presents itself and he can get your bullies alone, he “kindly” reminds them that you’re his friend, and how unfortunate it would be if he caught them being rude to you again
Let’s just say that you didn’t have much of a bully problem after that
Tsukishima isn’t one to talk about his feelings, especially to the person that he’s developing them towards. The hints were lost on you, but his friends could definitely tell that he had a soft spot for you, and teased him often for it
“Huh? You’re eating food that [y/n] brought for you again?” “Wow, I think you just might be in love with her, Tsukki.”
“Shut up, you’re all so annoying.”
He’s only upset because it’s true
From the moment you introduced yourself to the class, Yamaguchi was 1000% interested. What made you move to Japan? What is your home country like? Is the food as good as it looks on the shows he’s seen? He had so many questions, but was a little too shy to approach you to ask
Yams is extremely observant, and from early on he noticed how much you were struggling to keep up and adapt to an entire new country. He also couldn’t help but feel for you when he noticed how often you sat alone
When he noticed how rude and standoffish people were to you, he made it a point to at least introduce himself
He quickly became embarrassed once he realized how hard an introduction is when there’s a language barrier. He still tried through, and you really appreciated it, showing him by bringing a few native foods for him the next day
He loved them - the food was way, waaay better than he thought it was going to be
Yamaguchi understood personally how it felt to be made fun of and left out, so whenever he caught you alone, he always tried to reach out to you. Despite already having a full plate, he gave himself the task of learning a bit of English/Spanish whenever he could, so that when he had the chance to speak to you, he could show off his newfound language skills
You. Didn’t have the heart to tell him that. He was horrible at speaking your language, though, but you. Appreciated it all the same
You felt comfortable enough to ask him to help you learn Japanese, so every Friday night you’d meet together and have a mini cram sesh, and thanks to him your competency in the language soared
He grew to admire how free you were, not really caring too much about what other people had to say or think about you
“How do you do it, [y/n]?”
“Well, I figured that people are going to look at me weird anyway, so I might as well have fun while they’re doing it, right?”
Yamaguchi was the one who encouraged you try out for the girl’s volleyball team, preaching about how much fun he was having with his team
“It’s a lot of work, but I think you’d be really good at it, [y/n].”
He saw how motivated you were to do your best at everything, and wanted to do the same for himself
You reminded him so much of himself, and yet you were everything that he wanted to be and more
Contrary to his personality, Nishi was a bit standoffish towards you when you first transferred, not because he was afraid or uninterested, but because he momentarily reverted back to his scaredy-cat days and feared what you would think of him if he came off too strong as he normally does
When he noticed how energetic you were with your transfer buddy, he knew instantly how well the two of you would get along, excited to realize that you had similar personalities, especially when you were so cute
He didn’t let your language barrier stop him from becoming your friends, thinking of all kinds of ways to communicate with you, pictures, enthusiastic pointing and facial expressions
Being around him helped you to settle in, and overtime he became your (only) closest friend for a while
Nishi knew that you didn’t understand Japanese very well, and hated it when he could hear people talking about you, especially knowing that you couldn’t defend yourself
Knowing how short of a temper he can have, he usually tried to ignore it, shooting a dirty look behind him at whoever spoke about you in a negative way
One day though he couldn’t stop himself from finally voicing what he’d kept to himself for such a long time. You didn’t have much of a clue what he was yelling to them, but from the way his chest puffed out, and his face flushed a deep shade of red, and how the group of bullies eventually huffed and walked away, you could only reason that he had stood up for you
You didn’t think he could blush any deeper until you pressed a soft kiss on his cheek
“Y-yeah, it was no big deal.”
It definitely was, especially for him.
