Present for @quietaria from @fandomfanficsgalore
So, so! I have decided that I need to get more practise writing in different settings rather than slight variations to canon, and I’ve decided to write this little piece for fandomfanficsgalore’s fanfiction ‘Alternate Universe’ contest.
Please enjoy!
Rating: K
Fandom: Rune Factory (4)
Pairing: Arthur / Lest

Guilt And Blame
This is a gift for FandomFanficsGalore, since they write so damn well and have written like 20 RF4 request fics for me! Some on anon, some not hahahaha. So I chose some DougxLest hurt/comfort. It’s been a LONG time since I made a serious effort to write, it was quite fun to try again~ PS, I haven’t used tumblr on my laptop in over a year. I am desperately lost in the new formatting system so I apologize for any formatting errors or glitches. *** Emptiness. Cavernous expanses and echoing footsteps were all that resounded in the vast emptiness. Where once was a god, a god of brilliance and timeless wisdom, was nothing. Her pedestal unoccupied. It should never have been this way.
a/n: so this is just a gift for fandomfanficsgalore for being one of the loveliest people on the planet. they've written like five of my requests, so I figured it was about time I wrote something for them. also english is rly hard for a poor ol' dutch potato like me but atleast i tried Lest x Doug hurt/comfort fic bcuz I was in the mood for something sad hahha
With a concentrated hum, Lest peered through the telescope once again. He didn't come out here as often as he'd like. The small lookout point near the inn was beautiful this time of year; tall trees that were allowed to keep their green leaves were mixed in with the smaller trees on every side, their pink blossoms seeming to glow in the calming moonlight. A soft, yellowish hue mixed in with a lighter blue on the horizon, gradually fading into a darker blue overhead. Here and there, the twinkling of stars shone through the last silver clouds in the night sky.
Heaving a sigh, Lest adjusted the telescope, trying to get a better look. So far, all he's been able to see have been mountains and a stray waterfall here and there. Not that he was complaining - the sights around Selphia were breathtaking, as usual. But, after spotting so many rocks that all looked the same, the heart yearns for something exciting, fresh and new, for something more. Then, the approach of two feet got his attention. Lest whipped his head around, making him come eye to eye with Doug, who looked like he had just commited a terrible crime. Lest straightened his back, and Doug scratched his forehead in distrait, just below his hairline. ''Oh, Lest. I, uh- I didn't see you there.'' Lest raised an eyebrow at that. From the looks of it, Doug had taken the short route to get here, past the restaurant and airship, which would mean that Doug should've been able to see him from a mile away. Having walked past the buildings of Selphia a thousand times himself, Lest knew the streets like the back of his hand. It only seemed logical to Lest that something was bothering Doug, having come to this particular spot right away. Whatever it might be that was troubling the dwarf, Lest was determined to find out what was plaguing his mind, and hopefully as quickly as possible. Still, he decided to play along, even if just for a short while. ''Yeah, it's pretty dark out.'' Doug nodded sharply, his hands starting to fidget with the hem of his shirt. Lest cleared his throat, and inhaled a deep breath. ''So, is there any reason for you to be here in the middle of the night? Other than being unable to sleep?'' Doug took a few steps forward, and took over the hold on the telescope Lest was having. ''I guess that's your excuse?'' When Doug didn't receive a reply, he continued talking. ''Being unable to sleep.'' Lest nodded in agreement, though unseen by Doug, who was already peering through the telescope. Nonetheless, Doug still continued on as if he'd known that'd be Lest's reply. ''Yeah, same here.'' ''I highly doubt that.'' Doug removed his watchful eye from the telescope. ''Um, sorry?'' he said, not sure if he had heard that right. ''Most people who can't sleep drink some water, or take a walk without a set destination. You, on the other hand, went straight to this place.'' Lest crossed his arms, and shot Doug a look, as if daring him to go against him. ''Or, am I wrong?'' Doug huffed out a laugh and shook his head in dismissal, making Lest's brow furrow. ''Okay, sure. If that's what you wanna think, go ahead.'' Grumbling, Lest pulled Doug back from the telescope he had already begun looking through again. ''You can also just tell me why you did go here to begin with.'' Lest took on a softer tone of voice, fluttering his eyelashes in an attempt to coax Doug out of his silent treatment. At seeing Doug's unimpressed gaze, Lest's usually cheerful features morphed into one of aggravation. ''I'm not an idiot, you know.'' Doug rubbed his temple, but Lest couldn't tell if he did so to drive away his grogginess, or to calm himself down. ''You really wanna know, huh?'' Lest gave him a determined nod. Doug motioned with his free hand towards the telescope. ''Take a look, then.'' He pointed towards the mountain range. ''Between those two peaks, all the way near the base. What do you see?'' After a couple minutes of searching for the place Doug described, it felt like the air grew heavier around Lest by the second, pressing down his earlier accusations into the ground. Finally finding the spot, he withdrew from the telescope shortly after. ''There's nothing there.'' ''Exactly.'' Once having noticed Lest's confused stare, Doug continued. ''But there used to be.'' After a few silent seconds, it finally dawned on Lest. His village. Doug was talking about his old village. Lest reached out to Doug's shoulder, placing his hand on his jacket in a vain attempt to comfort him. ''Doug- I... Goddammit...'' Lest pinched the bridge of his nose, pressing his eyelids together tightly. ''Doug, I'm sorry. Gods, I'm so stupid...'' When he didn't receive a reply, he tried again. ''Doug, I'm really sorry. I should've known, I'm sorry.'' Finally, Doug showed him a slight shrug, though his eyes held the slightest hint of pain and regret. ''Can't really change it now. What's done is done.'' He quickly followed it up with an ''I guess'', making Lest's worry grow. ''I'm sorry.'' ''Don't be.'' Slowly, Doug sought out the touch of Lest's hand. He found it, and slowly took the Prince's hand in his own. Currently, both of their gazes were turned towards the mountains, and Lest could've sworn he felt the faintest squeeze of Doug's hand, tightening his grip without trying to be obvious. Lest showed a faint smile. ''Let's just watch, okay?'' Doug said, but the way his voice wavered and became softer with every syllable, with the words coming out stammered and broken, pulled so hard on Lest's heartstrings, it felt like they had snapped. It was like someone had tied a weight to his chest, and no matter how much he swallowed the knot away in his throat, or how deep he inhaled a breath of cold air, the feeling just wouldn't fade. Lest tightened his grip on Doug's hand, with no intentions to let go anytime soon. ''... Okay.'' The horizon had turned dark.
Hey! Someone may have asked already... but the family thing sounds fun. Could I perhaps be Elena from Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny? We're basically the same person lol
She isn’t taken, so you can have her! I’m glad you can get the character you like :)
