It was the softest, briefest kiss.

Theresa pulled back sharply as if she'd been burned, her fingers touching her mouth parted in shock. Carl looked at her, guileless, making no further advance.

It was as if he was waiting for her.

As if they were waiting for her.

"What-" She could barely start the question. Her heart was beating so hard that she almost thought she could hear it in the quiet room. "Why-" She shook her head. That wasn't a question she wanted to risk asking. She sat further back, folding her hands in her lap as she'd always been taught to do. "I don't want to come between you," she said softly.

Martin, to her surprise, was the one who made the next move. He took a seat next to her on the couch, putting her exactly where she didn't want to be. He reached out slowly, placing his hand over her folded ones when she didn't pull away.

"You won't," Martin said.

"How? How can you say that?" She had to ask; she had to know.

Martin blushed, his cheeks coloring quickly as he momentarily dropped his gaze. He looked up again, nervous but sincere as he gently grasped her hand.

"Carl and I," Martin looked past her and Theresa saw Carl nod, "we want to be with you."

Carl nodded again when Theresa looked him. "We talked about it. Extensively," he said, smiling like they were sharing a joke.

Theresa couldn't believe what she was hearing. She wasn't ready to believe it was possible.

"In... in what way?"

"In any way you want," Martin answered.

Theresa's heart was racing as she looked back and forth between the two men. The two married men. She had never imagined that she would, or could, want something like this but she had felt a strong affection for Martin from the moment he bumbled their first phone call. She was disappointed when she learned he was married; she was surprised when his husband had wanted to meet her. Carl was warm and charming and it was easy to see how Martin had fallen in love with him.

How they had fallen in love with each other.

How she seemed to be falling in love with them.

"What if I want everything?" she asked, her voice trembling.

Carl leaned forward again, taking her face gently in his hands. He didn't kiss her. He smiled, soft and sweet.

"Then we'll give you everything."

Theresa pushed towards him, kissing him as Carl laughed and Martin sighed. She kissed Carl, then, because she could, turned and kissed Martin, hearing Carl laugh again as Martin squeaked in surprised. Carl's arms wrapped around her waist as Martin's wound around her neck and kisses rained down on her from all sides.

She laughed, reveling in the warmth and attention.

It was everything she could've hoped for.

Theresa watched the open countryside roll along through the tinted windows of the hired car. Security was far less of a concern in Fitton than it was in other parts of the country but an unfamiliarity with the city made it easier not to drive. The cool, crisp fall day was muted by the seclusion of the car; there was no breeze and no sound aside from the generic music playing softly from the car radio. Only the colors of the season reached the interior of the car, even if they were dulled by the heavy window tint. Fields of various color and crop moved pleasantly along as the car wound its way towards the prestigious school.

Unlike the rest of Fitton, which had a warm and welcoming charm, Maxi's school was located at the end of a long paved drive, high walls and wrought iron gates drawing a hard boundary between the city and the privileged student body. There seemed to be less color within the walls, green, yellow, and orange fields replaced by grey concrete and pristine white walls.

Theresa felt the fall Fitton breeze brush up against her as she stepped out of the car. In other parts of the city, the breeze often carried the smell of food or flowers but on the school grounds she could only smell the moist asphalt of the circular driveway. The high white walls of main administrative building stood in stark contrast to the queue of black hired vehicles waiting patiently behind her.

She heard the soft chirp of her phone as she approached the entry steps. She paused to check, smiling at the message and composing a quick reply before slipping her phone back into her jacket pocket.

"Just arrived at Maxi's school. We should be there soon."

"Just arrived at Maxi's school. We should be there soon."
