Chapter One: Such A Time We Had Together
Sunny hated driving. He hadn't had his license for very long, but he only drove sporadically anyway, since the road gave him anxiety. The house he'd been living in for about two years now was thankfully decently close to Faraway Town, so he didn't have to drive too much or too far, and if you wanted to get anywhere in town, everything was walking distance.
He drummed his fingers frenetically on the steering wheel to a tune he had bouncing around in his head. This stupid car is going in Kel and Hero's driveway and not getting touched till the end of summer, Sunny thought. The idea brought a smile to his face.
This summer would be the last summer until Sunny, along with Aubrey, Kel, and Basil, would head to college. They'd all applied to the same college Hero was at currently, and by some miracle, they'd all gotten in. According to Hero, it was "a pretty versatile school, with something for everyone". Sunny didn't care too much. He was a little more worried about making it through college than what he was going to major in. Besides, now wasn't the time to think of that. From here on out, he'd be with his friends again.
Before the summer had started, the five of them had all agreed that they'd spend it together in Faraway Town, to make new memories and relive some old ones before opening a new chapter on their lives together.
Sunny couldn't remember the last time he'd looked forward to something this much.
As he pulled past the little sign that said "Welcome to Faraway" in bold letters, he slowed down, feeling a sense of happiness and nostalgia spreading over him like a warm blanket. This place had always felt more like home to Sunny than anywhere else.
Home isn't where you live. It's where you're loved. Hero had told him this right before he'd moved. There hadn't been much time for long goodbyes, considering Sunny and his mom had already postponed moving day longer than originally planned. Hero probably hadn't intended the words to be dwelled on, but they gave Sunny comfort, like a little mantra he'd play in his head on a bad day, reminding him his friends still loved him.
"Hey, guys," Sunny whispered to the empty car. "I'm home."
As he looked out at the town, exactly the same as he remembered, Sunny caught sight of a figure running full speed down the sidewalk towards the car.
Damn, Sunny thought, amused, did I summon him?
The figure drew closer, and Sunny could hear him shouting, something along the lines of "SUNNEEEEEEEEE!" He grinned and hopped out of his car to meet Kel.
His friend approached at an almost concerning speed, still yelling as he tackled Sunny in a hug, knocking the wind out of him.
"Sunny!" he said again, holding him by the shoulders at arm's length now. "Missed you!"
"..missed you too," Sunny agreed, still trying to catch his breath. "...are the others here?"
"Oh, yeah, they're coming. Hero went to pick up Aubrey so she wouldn't have to walk. They'll be here any minute now."
Sunny cast a glance at his car. "I- I had a ride... what do you want me to..?"
"You can drive it back home later," Kel waved a hand dismissively.
Later? Are we going somewhere?? Another thought suddenly occured to him. "You mentioned Hero and Aubrey ... what about ---"
"Basil's here too, yeah. I think he's meeting us there, though." Kel nudged Sunny with a grin. "He wouldn't miss seeing you again for the world." He nudged Sunny a second time.
"...is that tone necessary....?" He knew what Kel was getting at, of course. The friend group had long had a theory that Sunny and Basil were dating. They weren't, of course, but that didn't stop the whole group from shipping them. Sunny was pretty sure Aubrey and Kel were taking bets on how long it would take for the two to date.
Kel smirked. "That tone is absolutely necessary. A circle is straighter than the two of you."
Sunny decided not to reply, since he knew Kel wasn't wrong.
"Anyway, Basil's meeting us there --" "Meeting us where--?"
"--and Hero and Aubrey should be here any minu --- aha!"
A dark blue car rounded the corner as if on cue. It pulled up close to the two boys as Aubrey rolled down the window on the passenger side, her bright pink hair tied back in a ponytail. "Get in losers," she called. "we're going shopping." By the way she and Hero collapsed into giggles, Sunny assumed this was a reference to something, but he didn't ask.
"We are?" Sunny asked, climbing into the car after Kel.
"Releasing you crazy kids into the Othermart," Hero clarified. "What could go wrong?" He turned around in his seat briefly. "Hi, Sunny."
"Last time he took us to the store, Aubrey an' I--- hey!" Kel seemed to short-circuit as he looked up. "I get shotgun!"
Aubrey shrugged. "You could have, but you walked here, so. You snooze, you lose."
"And leave Sunny all alone?" Kel retorted dramatically.
"Sunny's fine," Aubrey answered dismissively.
Actually, having him meet me there was nice, Sunny thought but didn't say. He'd never liked being alone.
Hero shot Sunny a look as Kel and Aubrey continued to argue, like, See what I have to put up with?
They drove onwards to the store, with Kel and Hero loudly and badly duetting to the car radio, when Kel suddenly broke off and yelled, "STOP THE CAR!" so loudly that Sunny flinched, Aubrey jumped in her seat, and Hero slammed on the brakes so hard that all four of them went flying forward and recieved major seatbelt whiplash.
"What?! What is it??" Hero asked, alarmed. "Is everything all right?!"
Kel nodded. "Oh, yeah, everything's fine. Basil's just coming, is all."
Sure enough, when Sunny peered out the window, he could see his friend, running after the car and waving a hand. Sunny sat up straighter to get a better view, and Aubrey turned in her seat and said, "Gay."
Without looking back at her, Sunny gave a tiny smile. "I know you are, but what am I?"
"Also gay," Aubrey retorted, unruffled. "Gayer, even."
"I'm pretty sure Hero's the only straight one in this car," Kel pointed out.
"And I love and support you all!" he called from the front seat.
Aubrey snorted. "You couldn't do anything else if your life depended on it."
Sunny laughed and rolled his window down. "Hey, Basil!"
"Sunny!" he could faintly hear Basil call, speeding up as he ran. In about a minute, Basil was outside the car, grinning ear to ear. Sunny scooted over to the middle of the backseat as Basil opened the door and entered.
"Hey," he said, turning to Sunny and shutting the door. "It's been a bit."
Sunny nodded, unsure of what to say.
The two were silent and staring just long enough. Kel and Aubrey unfortunately noticed and began chanting, "Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!"
Basil flushed tomato red and dropped his gaze. Sunny elbowed Kel and kicked the back of Aubrey's seat as best he could from his position.
Aubrey just laughed. "Not wrong tho', no?"
"Very wrong," Sunny gritted out, aware of his mounting pulse. "Basil and I are not dating, and we do not have feelings for each other."
Basil nodded, though it seemed a little half-hearted.
Aubrey looked at the two of them a second longer and shrugged. "I hope you know we'll still be razzing you about it all summer."
Sunny sighed. "Figures."
